my opinion; I think you need to consider Toyotas overall dependability and resale factors. These are the very things that will maintain Toyotas place in the pack. Sure, they may lose a little market share as new GM's and Fords hit the market but, it will be short lived. I don't think those two brands can shake the problems they have in the short term. Let's re-visit this in 2 - 3 years.

In a sense they are targeting Ram and every other fullsize, Chevy is hoping to take away some full-size sales from other manufacturers as well with this new truck.

I don't care if it looks like a "real" truck. I care if it performs as a truck able to do almost anything. Like the Tacoma...

Have you ever owned a truck with 5.3 or bigger V8? The whole ecoboost arguement is not entirely accurate. Present day GM lowered the tow/power ratings to meet certain standards. Ford will probably follow suit, but if not, will lose credibility. Where these trucks lack is the gear ratio, and additional gears in the trans which equates to better low end torque, and power.

You are baseing this off of What Facts exactly? I need to know. Or are you just pulling this out of your buttocks and want us to just take your word for it?

I think that the bed is more than just generic " Plastic ". Say Reinforced Composite Resin, not plastic. I quite sure some thought and testing went into this before they placed them in production.

Its early, and I'm at work, but here are some links regarding plastic, polymer etc. Again, not to be negative, but Toyota didn't put a lot of research in the longevity of the actual truck frame, so what makes you certain they researched the composite material's durability? As mentioned, someone with actual expertise in composite materials should be addressing this. My posts are just my opinion and I may very well be wrong.

    http://www.gcrio.org/UNEP1998/UNEP98p62.html
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UV_degradation
    http://jcm.sagepub.com/content/36/24/2713.abstract
    http://www.usplastic.com/knowledgebase/article.aspx?contentkey=858

From what I've read, they can make it resistant to UV exposure, but not totally immune. I guess if it lasts say 20 years, then probably good enough. My concern would be the bed flexing when the vehicle starts to get some age.

almost, but their frames are garbage. it must be cheaper to make the same model for 10 years and do a recall for frames. thats what will bring toyota down.

Tacoma will survive, that is for sure. Toyota reliability and customer loyalty will keep it a very popular vehicle in the years to come.

There is a company here in Maine that is making composite bridge beams lighter and stronger than steel and they don't rot. If the composite will come apart in a few years they most likely would not be using them for bridge supports and yes they are exposed to sun light. I'm sure there are people out there with 05 Tacoma's with enough miles on them to retire the trucks their beds are still intact and the truck is worn out. Composites are ever where now including air craft. My "97" Tacoma had 285K on it the bed was pretty well shot. Before I retired my yearly mileage was around 35K so a 9 year old truck would have had 315,000 miles on it. My guess an old truck sitting in a field would be pretty well rusted away after the years except for the fiberglass flares and the bed.

They didn't give that info. I'm guessing it's gonna be a 2016 model

I'm sure the new GM twins will take some of Tacoma's sales away. Die hard GM fans will go that way. But they have to be competitively priced and have equal or better quality. And I'm not sure they will. As far as Nissan is concerned, they need to really improve their quality to be a serious threat to the Tacoma. I have a friend with a newer Frontier and a neighbor with a new Pathfinder. I'm not impressed by either. My Tacoma is my first ever Toyota, was a Chevy guy since 1985. I just thought GM's quality was going down while their prices were going up. And if the rumors of a major makeover of the Tacoma in 2016 hold true, Tacoma will easily stay at the top of the mid-size truck battle.

Some of the recent "what's your Tacoma worth" and sales pricing threads made me think the used market prices are overall a little lower in this region, which is the southeast.

Toyota is very popular here, but there is still a LOT of "no real man drives a Japanese badge" attitude and peer pressure when it comes to trucks. In fact, in a lot of the smaller towns you would probably suffer for it if you had a small business with mostly male customers. Say, an auto parts or hardware store.

So GM, Ford and Dodge still very strong in this market. I imagine a smaller truck from GM would do vey well around here.
