New clutch in my 1996 3rz 4x4 tacoma

    I just got my marlin crawler HD clutch and flywheel shipped to me. I have been searching everywhere for a DIY install guide, but I can't find one.i feel that i am mechanically inclined enough and I would like to do the install myself rather than paying a shop to do it. If someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.


    This is all that I have found ( Im hoping to find something that goes more in depth with the actual installing of the clutch and flywheel, rather than just dropping the tranny )

    Thanks for sharing these videos! I'm gonna start tomorrow morning. I'll keep the thread updated on how everything is going. If anyone else has any tricks or tips feel free to share :)

    caged, camburg long travel, 50t leafpack (soon to be installed) light rack over cab, 5pt harnesses etc
    do you have a tranny jack? your going to want something.

    I was able to get mine out with a floor jack and a 2x4. Don't recommend it unless it's the only thing you have.

    I'm doing it at my grandpas. I'm set with all the tools. I'm going to be using two 3 ton floor jacks and if I need to I can strap the tranny and transfer case to them.

    I'm thinking about replacing my rear main seal also. I have an oil leak and it looks like it is coming from between where the transmission and engine mount together.

    Scroll down and look at the pictures of the guy replacing the main seal.

    I think it would be worth it. The seal is only $20 so better safe than sorry

    I've replaced the rear mains on the last two clutches I've replaced. Just be careful with the seal. It's a little tricky to get back on.

    Not a 95, and frankly, there is a huge difference between the truck in the videos and a Tacoma, but they were a good watch and will show a good strategy to anyone looking to DIY a clutch.

    OP: Definitely replace the rear main while you're in there.
    I couldn't imagine having to rip the trans out only a few thousand miles after replacing a clutch because the rear main gives up the ghost.

    I did the rear main! I'm having trouble with lining the tranny back up. Any tips?

    Is the truck on the ground or in the air?
    Ground I assume since you said you were using 2 floor jacks.

    I've had issues before lining it up, but what I do is get behind the transfer case and put my feet up on the tcase with my knees bent while grabbing the output flange to help.
    Just use your feet to wiggle the rear of the tcase enough till the input shaft slips in.
    Its a trick an older wiser friend of mine taught me. :)

    Did you use the tool to set the clutch plate before you torqued the pressure plate down?

    I got the tranny back in and everything works!! The new clutch is so much better compared to my old one hahah
