Im in a jam without a garage and any of my tools. My clutch needs replacing and Ive got two quotes from two garages. One guy who is arguably more professinal says $1900 the other says $800ish. What in the F do I do? I have a bad relationship with the Toyota stealership I bought the truck from so I am not going there.

Seems high. I just quoted a guy here today on a 2008 4WD for a clutch job that was less than $600. And that was with an Aisin clutch, pressure plate, and release bearing!

$800 is about right. Stay away from the $1,900 moron. Make sure they resurface the flywheel, too.

shouldn't be more than 800, it's a 4 hour job plus resurfacing the flywheel. I did one last week and it was about that price using oem parts.

I spent $1200 at the dealer for new clutch, TOB, pressure plate and resurfaced flywheel.

$1900 is way too high. Given the problems with TOB on the Tacoma, I would go to a dealer so you are sure you have the latest rev of the parts and a warranty for 12k miles on the parts.

$1900 is way too high. Should be about $600-$800 range.

Agreed. Figuring labor time for the job is listed at 5.1 hours for R&R including replacing the pilot bearing, and removing the flywheel for resurfacing if needed. Average labor rate of $100 per hour nationwide (It goes up and down depending on location) then you are looking at $500 in labor alone at most any shop. Figure $250 or so on parts, and $50 for flywheel resurfacing, and you are looking at a national AVERAGE of about $800 for a full clutch job.

My local Midas did mine (labor) for $300. I bought the parts (LCE pro clutch) myself.

Fuck looks like I'm getting out of this around 1300, I'm up in Northern NH with a bunch of local untrustworthy mechanics. I guess I'm just going to suffer through it and fork over the money. Thanks guys!

Jesus Cody, at that price you could afford to come down here and let ME replace it, and STILL save money! AND you could enjoy some slightly warmer weather!

Not to mention I would be installing an Asian clutch and pressure plate assembly!!

It's high. Shop around. $350 for labor plus parts. I've used "perfection" clutch kits from AUTOZONE. I'll tell you what, they work well and last. (about $110) They have a stronger pressure plate and resist glazing over like the original LUK brand. There was still a lot of material left on my disc, but it slipped like hell. I'm sure that there are better, but not near this price.

    Zero,

That's good to know in S.Florida. I figured it would be higher. I used to do all that type of work on my own vehicles(engine swaps, transmissions, rear ends etc) but getting older, changes the patience levels big time for this type of work. Fortunately my clutch is doing just fine with 79K miles so far. It's not as crisp as it used to be but doesn't slip yet.

If that clutch plate is glazed, and slipping, but still plenty of material, then my money would be on a bad pressure plate.

Yeah, I always thought that it was too easy. The design of this new plate is different and the push to the floor is about 40% stiffer. I like the feel much better than the stock set-up.

REDLINE Transmissions in MARGATE, FLA. $500 parts and labor. The owners name is Ron. It's not worth getting dirty for THAT price.
