I need a new computer for my home. Can you give me some ideas as to what are decent brands these days. I'm sorry to post this in 2nd gen but that is what I have. Do not mention Dell please.

I work for the American heart Association as their IT guy for the Northeast. We use HP laptops it seems to be a good brand, they have great customer service they don’t blow you off they talk with you if you have a need help and they recently took over the number one spot over Dell last year

    i like my dell's:spy:.
My last was a HP and was pretty unhappy with it. It got slow quick, wasnt a cheap one either. Had dedicated graphics and all that. Its all in what you need. Im an engineer so i lean needing more high performance, the dell's fit that bill for me.

What are you doing with the computer? that changes a lot of things

I'm a gamer and watch a lot of movies on mine the only reason I don't want a Dell. It that they didn't repair my computer when I sent it in for repair and they took the video card out and kept it.

Whatever you’re looking for make sure it’s an Intel and a minimum of an I5 processor. If for just home use and not gaming then I would recommend an I7 or I9. Processor but $$$$
For memory nothing less than 8gb. You will need that!

Gamer? How much you spending? I just ordered a Xbox - X. Paid MSRP ($499) maybe the chip crunch is easing. Should be here Friday. I watch movies (stream) over a Mac mini.

That's an odd experience with Dell. I've been buying from Dell from over 20 years. I currently have 3 machines that're all 5+ years old and are still working with their original hardware (although they're getting long in the tooth with Windows bloat.) I'll be ordering another this year.

My recommendation would be go with a BestBuy machine if you're not tech savvy. I have family members that hassle the Geek Squad regularly and they eventually get straightened out. Don't overpay.. I doubt very seriously you need a $1k machine unless you're doing some serious gaming (and I can't help you in that department.) I do programming, CAD and 3D modeling which are relatively processor intensive.

I just bought the little MS a $720 HP all-in-one and she's happy with it. Spend the extra $100-$120 or so on an SSD if it's available versus a hard drive.

I’ve had good success with Asus machines. Had 3 in 15 years, just bought my 4th last year. Never had any hardware issues with any of them.

Agree on the SSD, well worth the investment.

Asus has a pretty nice series of gaming PCs, I bought a Asus ROG laptop 2 years ago and the only complaint is the battery life is terrible but I use it mostly as a desktop anyway so it's not really an issue for me.

This is just my opinion but any computer that comes with Windows 11 I would imediately downgrade it to 10, Windows 11 is terrible IMO.
Not a huge fan of 10 either but I can get along with it, 11 is kinda what Windows 8 was to 7 but worse.
I wish Microsoft would just leave crap alone and fix issues with the older OS's instead of making new ones with more garbage "features" that most people don't want/need, changing where everything is, and still having all the same bugs and exploits the older versions had.
My first experience with Windows 11 was :frusty::facepalm::rant: and I've used every version of Windows since 3.1.

Sorry for the rant good luck on the search for a new PC:thumbsup:

Asus and Lenovo are my primary go to brands. HP business class laptops are good (the more expensive ones),but I have had bad experiences with their standard line… let’s just say they made it an art of having the laptop have major issues right outside of warranty.

If you want one for gaming go NZXT. They are the only line of prebuilt pc that I have seen that don't skimp out on using some cheap parts to cut corners. They have custom prebuilt PC and also have a line where you can order a box with all the parts to build one yourself with instructions. You can also find videos how how to build a PC on youtube.

Also stay away from HP. They are crap. Apple PC are also crap for gaming. Dell has too much proprietary hardware that limits your potential.

I would say AMD since they left intel in the dust in performance and price. Also why in the world would you recommend an i7 or i9 for just home use? That is overkill and a waste of money for just streaming the web with no gaming. Also I would recommend at minimum 16gb of ram since that is the sweet spot for gaming with at minimum of an Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 for gaming. An intel i3 or amd ryzen 3 would be beneficial for just home use.
