New coolant leak

My 2003 3.4L has begun dripping coolant down the front of the engine. None of the hoses have a leak, so it's most likely from the water pump. What's odd is it started leaking yesterday morning after sitting overnight at my daughter's house, so I had to get it home. After a short drive home, no more leak. Nothing. This morning the leak was back. I'm going to drive it a bit and see if the leak goes away after the engine warms up (to see if that was why it stopped yesterday). I plan to make an appointment to have the WP replaced, and while in there have them check out/replace the timing belt, although that was done about 20k miles ago, since it has to be removed to get to the water pump. Anything else I should have them do?

At the moment, I'm simply collecting the leaking coolant and putting it back in until I can take it in for service.

 

You got the timing belt done 20k ago; you didn't get the waterpump replaced?

That's always suggested to do at the same time.

 

And the fan bracket too, fan bracket pulley, this get skipped a lot

 

Timing belt was done before I bought the truck, so who knows...when my SIL & I took off the timing belt cover, it looked newish, but I couldn't really see the water pump.

 

I would get a complete timing belt/water pump kit that includes the bearings and tensioner. I have installed the Aisin kit about 10 times now with zero issues and many miles. All Japanese/original parts.

Also, why not buy new coolant? You'll need a good bit anyways. Using old stuff, dripping down your engine bay, and reintroducing it into the coolant passages contaminated with dirt and crap seems beyond frugal.

 

Makes sense. I'm not going to be driving the truck until I take it in, so I'll just collect the leaks and not put it back in the radiator.

 

My engine and water pump was saved by all the slow leak built up crustacean. I went to break some of it off and the mechanic said “don’t touch it, that slowly built up calcified crud is what’s been saving your ass thus far!

 

Repairs complete - no more leaks.

Another question - when I was investigating the water pump leak, and removing the timing belt cover, 2 of the 3 small clips on the top of the cover that hold what look like vacuum lines were broken. Not a huge deal, but I'd like to replace those, if anyone can steer me towards a part number. I did a fair amount of searching the Camelback parts site, but I cannot seem to locate the correct diagram to find those 3 clips. They go on top of this:

 

There is a vacuum line diagram also, can you find that?

 

I might be able to find something on ALLDATA. Let me check

Those are clips for your spark plug wires. Maybe that will help you find them.

 

I remember those came with an OEM set of ignition wires.

Loom clips, you should be able to find something that works at any decent auto part store.

 

Those are the ones, thank you! I will see if those wires need replacing. If not, I'll check out the auto parts stores as @fxntime suggested.
