    Question about Donor cases

I have a 2013 Tacoma V6 Manual transmission. In the install manual (it says VF2 cases though) there is a short list of parts that you need that are not included in electric shift donor case.

These parts appear to have been included on the 2010-2015 4Runner cases according to parts lookups. Are those 4runner cases manual shift? EDIT: Looks like they are indeed manual shift. 2013-2015 has some models with electronic shift apparently?

Is the 2010-2015 4Runner case the ideal donor?

EDIT: The ideal donor is a manual shift case.

If you have to get a donor then I'd recommend getting a manual shift case so you don't have to also buy the extra parts.

A manual shift case from a 4 Runner or automatic FJ Cruiser are probably the most popular options. A transfer case from a 1st gen 3.4L Tacoma would also work. I think there is a donor compatability list on NWF website.

Are these still available for order? Does it require a custom drive shaft?
I’ve been thinking about increasing my low range ratios but not sure if it’s really worth the hassle. I’m only on 33s and don’t wheel that often but I love crawling slowly up the mountain passes in Colorado. Cheers

I ordered mine in mid Jan and got it this past Wed, so about 20 weeks lead time but that may tighten up. I know that had someone had been out of country, but Kris the product lead has been excellent and responsive.

You will need to modify driveshafts.

    Thanks for sharing this info.
Did you add another shifter for this? Right?
This seems like such a great mod. But it’s a heavy modification I’m not sure if it’s necessary for me yet.

Yes, it would require and additional shifter. You can keep your electronic shifting case behind it, or can put in an FJ case, or another case entirely.

I already have a marlin setup with triple sticks that I am pulling out, and will be installing the NWF triple stick setup with an FJ case behind it.

It's definitely one of the more complex mods.

Very complex. I have a MT so adding another stick for low range doubler would be easier. And I don’t mind it there in the boot.
Maybe if I get more into rock crawling I’ll do this mod. But for now my set up seems pretty good.
I will admit though after moving to 33s it requires more throttle to get up obstacles. Just a slight difference. I’d rather be able to slow down and have way more control and also not worry about stalling.

Do further modifications need to be done to strengthen the truck in preparation for a crawl box? Or can you install one of these and have at it if you're careful?

So far I've just been having at it carefully. If the wheels get pinned or bound up I back out of it so I don't twist the transfer case off. On my list of winter projects is fabbing up a cross member for the transfer case to alleviate that concern.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. I don't wheel hard or anything, but ultimately just want more control going over rocks.

I'm the same, and it works beautify for that use. The truck will just idle over "most" things, and barley have to use the clutch.

That sounds ideal. Where did you get yours installed? Can you share some images of the additional shifter? How does it feel after the driveshaft alteration? Thanks for any help you can provide.
I see you have a SC installed as well, super cool. You're going in the direction I would like to go.

I did the install in the garage over the course of a few days. I didn't feel like it was that difficult of a project, but little nerve racking cutting into basically a new truck. I have a few pictures on page 5 of this thread. I had the front and rear driveshafts modified at a local drive line shop but ultimately ended up getting one piece rear from Tom Woods. Had a vibration and didn't feel like playing the shim game and the one piece solved it.

If you have any other questions I'll try my best to answer.

Yes, Crawl box and Magnuson Supercharger low end torque for days.... Also a good way to find weak parts if not careful ;)

@jstemp - Looks like you used a push-button 1st gen case as a donor? And everything's been working fine?

I just got my setup done with the same donor case, and there's a little confusion on weather or not those one-touch hybrid cases work. But mine shifts perfectly, and from what I can tell the low range setup on those cases are the same as a Jshift, so I'm gonna give it a go.

    Looks great!

Yes, that is the case I used as a donor. The low range planetary gearset is the same as the later VF cases. The only difference would be the shifter. The push button case uses the ball type and the J shift is a spade.

Have about 3,400 road miles on it and a few offroad outings without issue or leaks. Been very happy with the setup.

    Awesome, thanks!

That was what I've determined as well looking over part diagrams. And the shifter difference doesn't even matter when using their triple stick setup.

Yotanation.com is ~$200 cheaper then NWFs website. Is that legit?

Have all of you who have made the purchase purchased direct?

EDIT: seems some vendor reviews here on TW paint yotanation as a potential scam and to be avoided.
