I picked up two new CV's from toyota yesterday. Got my truck up on a lift today. Take it all apart. Unbox the new CV's, and WTF.. see pic.

The dust shields are dented. Toyota dealer says, CV's are back-ordered. Can't get me any. (although I went back onto the online Toyota parts system, and they seem to have them available). But, truck is up on the lift. Truck needs to go on vacation in a few days.. I think I have to make due.

We bent the dust shields back. The lip on them is not smooth, or tapered the way it was before. The rubber seal is still OK. Mechanic says he thinks it should be fine.

    What do you all think?

I would try to remove the ones off your original cv's and see if you can swap them over. I have been successful doing it before instead of waiting for replacement parts.

They seemed to be part of the rest of the metal and not removable.. not sure, tho.
BUT, it's too late for that. We already bent them back as well as possible and they're finishing the install now.
At this point I'm mostly wondering if people think it will be an issue. It's not a seal.. It's just a dust shield. Stuff would still get in there, even in good shape, I think.. And this is going to end up likely being just a little more of a gap than if it were ok. Just little gaps in the rough edge of where we bent it back.

I would run them, personally. It mates up with the seal on the back of the spindle to keep junk out of your wheel bearing so it's important, but doesn't need to be absolutely perfect like a seal that's retaining oil. The seal is also replaceable so you could reuse your old seal as mentioned or go get a new one from the auto parts store.

Problem is you may lose any warranty if you install and use them.

The truck doesn't have warranty, but maybe the CV's do.. And I did just find posts about replacing the shields.. so yeah.. I guess I can do that.. But again.. time constraints..
The shields on the old CV's got bent when the mechanic just let them drop to the ground.. (even tho I told him I'm saving them to reboot them).

Parts usually have a limited warranty from the dealer. Labor as well if you use them for install.

It's really not a big deal. They are just dust seals. Bend them back and be done with it.

They are just dust shields, damaged in shipping looks like. Bend it and send it.

I bent mine when removing my axle. I took a hammer and bent it back over.
Mine was more of a warp, yours I would use pliers and bent it by hand.
    So far, so good.

I agree with others that you'll be good. I've put a hammer to my dust shield after rebuilding and it's been fine for awhile now.

I just replaced those shields with my axel reboot, wheel bearing and all seals replacement. As others have said bending is good to go as they really don't contact anything. I bent mine a bit installing and tapped it back out. That seal and the one on the inner spindle touch rubber-to-rubber. Those axel seals are dealer only and good luck if they have them in stock.

Almost all the reman cv axles we get have those dented from shipping from Toyota . Totally fine just bent them back. Double check when they are installed that the boots aren’t under vacuum (boots sucked in) also give a good visual and make sure there are no holes in the boots we gotten a few with small holes

I just replaced my CVs maybe three months ago and they arrived just like that. Those shields are so easily bent you'd think they'd package things a little better. Anyway, I bent 'em back too and installed. No problems whatsoever; just a little annoyed that a brand new part arrived damaged.

As long as the rubber not torn or damaged, you should be fine.
