New Dorman Pre-Assembled Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Assembly - thoughts?

I went with koyo bearings the first time and they went out at 20k I have Timken and the passenger side is going out now after 38k on a them.

I'm going to try these out next time just to save me time and money and make these into a spare set.

 

Can you not just replace the hub bearing/ mount and re-use the rest? Well replace the seal if its worn.

 

I just received a

$125 Dorman 950-004 Pre-Pressed Hub Assembly - Front Compatible with Select Toyota Models (OE FIX)

Dorman 950-004 assembly for my Prerunner and was surprised to see a hole in the center (like the 4wd version). The stock bearing has no hole. Am I supposed to buy some sort of dust cap to cover this, or just run it like it is?

 

I just saw the dust cap pressed in covering the hole in the stock assembly. Where can I get one of those?

 

I think you are referring to 'front hub grease cap'
They sell them on eBay oem should be <15$

Didn't you take that off to get access to the axle nut?

 

Prerunners don't have to part that you're talking about since there is no axle and hence no axle nut.

 

Is it okay to run without that cover, or do I need to find one and press it in?

 

Knock the cap out of the old one and hammer it into the new one. Do not run without the cap as water and dirt can get inside and into the bearings....and then you'll be buying a new one before you know it.

 

That's what I figured, just wanted to double-check. Thanks for the heads up.

 

20k? On Koyos? 38k on Timmys? Sounds like something went wrong.
1. Make sure when they are pressed your not applying pressure across the rollers, press the inner race.
2. Put a little dab of grease on the lip of the seal.
3. 173 ft/lbs on the nut.

Another vote for BamaToy's hub & bearing assembly. His extra work of removing the small amount of factory grease and replacing with ample quantity of good stuff seals the deal for me.

 

I had a catastrophic failure of the right front Wheel Bearing at 225k miles on my abused 2012 TRD. Towed to the house, Went to O'Reilly's, bought a new wheel bearing, took it apart to discover the bearing failure cut into the shaft & you needed a Hydraulic Press to mount the new bearing...So I went BACK to O'Reilly's and had to order the assembled

I also has to replace the Caliper, Pads & Rotor since the bearing failure caused rotor to dig into Caliper & ate the Brake Pads. The new Bearing easily fit back in, Life was good.... Not so much. The Traction Control & ABS lights stayed on, thinking that they should go off in a couple miles, I drove it to work, by end of day it felt & sounded like the Wheel Bearing was going out? Impossible, it's brand new.... I made it 300 miles total on 2nd day before it rapidly got worse until I finally determined the BRAND NEW Wheel Bearing had failed....another Tow Truck to get me home. Tear it down again....

 

Thinking that this has to be a fluke & I just have bad luck....I ordered another ($197) and installed this 1....luckily they have a 1 year warranty. But....Traction Control & ABS Lights are still on....this worries me.

 

Those bolt heads on your replacement hub look chewed...what are you using to tighten/loosen them, vise grips??

 

The ABS sensor is likely damaged.

Those assemblies are cheap, and built cheap as well. I wouldn’t trust the lock nut is torqued properly.

 

Do they make pre pressed front bearing/hub assembly for 2001 Tacoma 4x4? I can’t find them anywhere
