Good Morning. 2007 5 lug, regular cab, regular bed. My local shop says I need new drive shaft. Vibration when in gear but stopped. Also vibration above 45 mph. Will check motor mounts before doing driveshaft. Quote is $900 for new driveshaft and install. They are a great shop but having replaced ujoints myself I am assuming I can install this myself. Can get get new oem shaft delivered for 400. My question is: do new drive shafts usually have new ujoints and mounts pre installed? Or do I need to get new ones and install myself? I’ve searched but have gotten no definitive answer. I am asking because if I have to deal with ujoints myself I may just have shop do it. Thanks. Bob

Will come complete and balanced. Depending on brand ujoints will not be great quality. Most likely oem ujoints will not fit. I replaced my driveshaft with and ebay part was difficult to find exact size u joint. Have been running for 2 years with ujoints being replaced after about a year due to failure. You can definitely replace the driveshaft yourself with a ratchet strap and a couple jackstands.

Is that your chief complaint? Vibration when stopped? I dont see how a driveshaft can cause vibrations when fully stopped. If the wheels aren't turning neither is the drive shaft..

That and vibration above 45 mph. I will check motor mounts before I order driveshaft. Thanks.

    Yeah.
Likely motor or transmission mounts. Not very likely the driveshaft.

EDIT: The vibration around 45 mph might be the driveshaft, but not while stopped. You may have more than one issue here. If the rubber in the center support bearing is toast, your transmission mount or motor mounts might be toast as well.

The center support bearing can be replaced much cheaper than an entire driveshaft.

EDIT #2: If you have a 5-lug regular cab, you probably have a single-piece driveshaft and no center support bearing.

Still leaning toward motor and tranny mounts.

Vibration while not moving? Sounds like something else? A pulley? Harmonic balancer?

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
For shits and giggles pop the number four coil out (because it’s easiest to get to) and see if the tip is covered in oil or dry.

I'm 70 years old in March and have been working on cars since I was 14 years old. This is my experience and is not absolute.
I've never had to replace an engine / transmission mount.
I've never seen where a mount replacement fixed a vibration issue.

I don't understand why they suggested a complete drive shaft replacement when it can be easily rebuilt with new universal joints and center bearing. The exception is if it were damaged by an impact to the shaft or a damaged yoke... Did the shop say why other than you just need a new one?

To bet installed: bling grill, headlights, fog lights.
I’m 10 years behind you and agree with all you said. I had an MGB I ran hard that had a motor mount with the rubber completely separated. Replaced it. Had to make a special wrench. Couldn’t tell the difference with the new mount installed.
