I have new Duratrac's installed ( less than 500 miles on them) and when driving at a constant speed (cruise control at 62 mph) I get slight wheel shake sometimes. I travel to work on the same stretch of highway each day in the truck and set cruise control. Could this possibly be the road surface causing the wheel shake and not a balancing issue? I was thinking a slight balancing issue but wouldn't the wheel shake occur all the time while using the cruise control set.

    Thanks

There are a lot of people that complain about wheel shake with dura tracs. For some there is no amount of balancing that can fix it, and it is just the tire being crappy.

I want them really bad, because they handle snow really well, but i dont know that it's worth the risk of a shaking truck.

Best thing you can do it go back to where you got em and complain... they might be able to get them better balanced. There's also a warranty you might be able to use, or a return/exchange policy depending on where you got em.....

If it was the tire it woulddo it at the same 62mph on any stretch of roadway. Sounds like poor roadway engineering if it's only that one stretch. I have Duratracs & have zero problems in nearly 10k miles of all-weather condition driving. Most of the Duratrac balance issues I read about are E-load 10ply tires. Stick to the C-Load 6ply that were engineered for our trucks & the percentage of issues plummet.

Just put Duratrac C-loads on my truck this weekend and after about 200 miles I haven't had a single vibe. They ride beautifully and look awesome. Can't wait to try them off-road.

I had some Duratracs for a grand total of about two weeks, took them back and said no thanks (Due to vibrations etc).. Very likely to be a balance issue, and you could very well spend every couple of weeks going to get them balanced.. Sometimes you get some bad tires that just won't balance. But some people get a good set and never have issues. Don't know where you purchased them, but I'd go back and let them know, have them road forced balanced. Then go from there.

    Some of the things...
It's the tires. I've rotated 3 times in 15k miles and had them rebalanced as well. Mine will go away after 15-20 miles of steady driving. Beware!

I have Duratracs on my 2015 Taco and my 2007 Tundra. Bought the tires for offroad ability, but yes, I have experienced vibes with my (newer) set on the Tacoma. Usually goes away after 5 minutes of driving. I think I might try the Toyo Open Country AT IIs when these wear out.

What would be considered enough wheel shake to go back and complain? Sometimes I have no shake at all with the cruise on. The highway is somewhat crappy around here too. Maybe it is the combination of heavier tire, bigger lug and poor pavement...

All I can ad to the discussion is, all of us have got mighty dang spoiled! I still remember the days when pretty much all we had for off road tires were bias ply mudders that were rarely completely round, frequently WAY out of balance, noisey as all get out, and wore so fast you could see the rubber flying off of 'em!

If it only happens on one stretch of road at a certain speed, but not anywhere else, its the road. Don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to get to the bottom of that mystery.

One other piece of evidence to the mystery, I didn't have any wheel shake with the stock dunlops on the same piece of road. Lol. Will bigger lug tires cause some wheel shake?

I suppose it could depending on the road surface.

The pavement has ruts and in some places is rumpled and has waves in it.

I'm glad we have crappy roads around here. I ripped a big wheel weight off one front tire wheeling and don't even notice it. That's all I got.

I guess I should just drive it and forget the slight shake. That's it I'm blaming it on the roads and the aggressiveness of my nice looking Duratrac's ;) :burnrubber:

Nearing 10k on my duratracs, lots of city, probably 5k highway and a bunch offroad... Only time I've had noticeable shake on smooth roads was when my wheels were full of mud which threw them way out of balance until the next wash

There you go. If it doesn't spill the spill beer in the cup holder no worries.

^Lifehack #27: Use the seatbelt buckle to open beer bottles.

Could be the waviness of the pavement causing some harmonics with the tire. Different tires will have different natural frequencies depending on weight, tread pattern, sidewall stiffness (which is also affected by tire pressure)...

Did the tire shop do a static balance, dynamic balance, or dynamic balance with a RoadForce roller?

Had the same vibe at around 55...it was 100% the tires, at least one of my C rated ones where about if round but balanced out fine...still issues. I returned them after 5k miles for a full refund and bought the KO2 instead...I also had the weird feeling that some days the vibs were worse and some days they were better.

The Ko2 are smooth as silk compared to my duratarcs.

I heard the E rated duratarcs have less issues
