Everyone in here talking about new engines and short blocks. No one is trying to figure out what caused it?

did you change your coolant at or before 100,000mi?

For 18K I would sure hope the dealer figured that out for him. Guess we’ll see.

They’re in it for the money. For $18k I’ll
Buy a new truck. They’ll quote him 40hrs and get it done in 15, pocket the rest.

Sounds like OP already signed off on the new engine. Used swap was the answer though. Admittedly I don’t stare at the temp gauge all day, but I’m surprised it overheated that badly.

Junk yard engine with less than 100k will set you back $5k

Labor to remove engine and install another will be $4-6k

    Your thought are WAY off

any man made machine can fail.. i've only seen one Tacoma engine failure at work since the 3rd gen has come out. 90k it threw a rod for literally no reason.. it happens. we put a new used engine in for the tune of 7.2k installed at a dealer... (15k miles on that engine.)with a warranty and it has been running around now for 2 years with no issues.

I think people have this mindset on the older generations of Tacomas . This is a completely different engine . Yes it’s more reliable than most vehicles. But unfortunately not anywhere close to what the engine used to be .

Eh. Arguably I’d say powertrain wise they’re as reliable as the old ones. The electronics can pause more issues. Failures in the real world are way less common than forums would make you believe

You forgot the $13,900 for changing the fluids.

While the 4.0 is arguably the best Tacoma (I’m biased), even 6 year old coolant with 145,000mi or not changing the coolant can fry a thermostat or break any engine.

Still wondering if OP ever changed or was running stock.

I’ve gotten lucky with the 2 cars I have now, but buying used cars scares me since most people will only ever change the engine oil and Coolant, trans oil, t case, differentials, brakes fluid will still be original at 150k miles

I’ve got a few 200k+ trucks that come in that haven’t replaced coolant.
Not recommended. But meh. Modern Toyota pink coolant doesn’t break down like the old stuff. My 06 corolla had 400k on its coolant before I changed it. That car was something I never touched shit till something broke. Lol

what likely has happened is a water pump failure that wasn’t noticed and repaired. That’s the biggest issue with any Toyota cooling system that usually leads to failure of the headgasket when it’s ignored too long

Never buy a first year model of any vehicle. Not even Toyota.

I am not sure why it would matter at this point. Curious why it overheated also. But there have been a few here and there that cracked a cylinder and popped a head gasket. 140k on coolant while slightly contributing to it shouldn’t be the sole cause. I believe Toyota Coolant is good to 100 per the manual. Doubt it would cause an engine implosion post that

100,000 is the upper limit. You should do it sooner or at 5 years.

As coolant ages it loses its unique abilities and reaches boiling point faster.
