So about a year ago i bought an 06 4x4 taco 6 speed manual with about 76,000.
one day drove it 500 miles straight, then oil light came on. Checked oil and it was completely out. Got back home and it was almost out again. Took it too shop and he said 06 was a bad year(something engine related but cant remember) which caused the oil to drop. He said just keep oil high, but engine is slowly gonna die. That being said I drove it for about a year and the other day was driving and rapid banging noise started happened until it died. Drifted off the road, started it again and a really loud rapid metal on metal noise was coming from the engine. Got it towed home and was told it was a busted rod, so engine needs to be replaced. went to shop got quoted 7 k used and over 10k for a new engine. Only had the truck for 4,000 miles so pretty pissed and cant afford this right now. So looking to see if it had happened to anyone else, what they did, Or suggestions on what i should do.
Oh and still owe about 10k on the truck :((

Hate to hear that, that's the first I've heard Bout that problem with any of toyotas 4 liter engines. 7 - 10 seems steep for a engine but I've never personally replaced an engine.

Sorry to hear this. Never heard about it either. 7K to 10K is crazy. You only need a short block, gasket kit. Not complete engine.

You mention it busted a rod. So, that's lower end (Short block). Shouldn't of hurt anything on upper half of engine. Google it and you should be able to find pricing on short block.

I haven't heard of any others.

But if you ran it out of oil, even once, that hurt the engine. Probably really chewed the rod and main bearings, plus the camshaft.

It was only time and miles until it completely let go.

That sucks to hear OP. Personally I'd be on the search for another mechanic.

I haven't had it looked at by a shop yet or anything. Just from what i told the mechanic and from what a buddy told me they said it was a rod and its only running on 5 cylinders and if you keep running it it'll get worse??

I had an '06 V6 with 175K without a lick of problems. I have never heard of a V6 having trouble as you describe.... I4 maybe, at least in a Camry. The I4 Camry engines clog oil return holes and burn oil, nothing like happened to you.

That sounds like a whole lot of scratch for an engine replacement. I had a V6 replaced in a Bonneville for $1200 including the engine. Granted a truck would be more, especially if your looking at a low mileage engine.

Sounds like you need a different mechanic. "bad year engine, will eventually blow" is a terrible diagnosis for the first time you went in. Did he say what was bad about it? Toyota has been using this same engine in multiple vehicles for quite a while. Makes no sense that 05, 06, and 07 would be "bad years" when the engine in a '13 is unchanged and exactly the same.

I just googled it and Camelback Toyota is selling 2012 short bocks for 3200.00
I'm sure someone else has one like Jasper and there's a couple others. Which
    would be less than Toyota.

20-30 hours labour to re and re an engine? Now thats funny!! There's something critically wrong if the re+re time exceeds 10 hours. 25-30 hours should install that new short block that was mentioned for 3200, so with a gasket set, you should be under 7K for a brand new OEM short block installed, running, and driving out the door, provided the cams and cam journals in the heads are OK. Keep shopping, I'd be looking for a good used complete engine from a wreck myself.

I've never heard of a 1GR consuming oil, whether its an 05, 06, or 07. Sounds like someone severly neglected servicing at some point.
