Anyone want to speculate if it will be possible to just buy the new 3.5 liter engine and drop it in a second generation Tacoma?

Why would you put that engine in? I hate the "LS swap all the things" mentality but shit, in this case, it totally makes sense. Better building platform, better power and torque...AND better gas mileage. What people don't realize is that the standard tacoma engine doesn't quite have the guts to deal with highway speeds in top gear without getting abysmal mileage. It doesn't make enough torque. As much as I hate to admit it, an LS would solve that and still be reasonably efficient.

I'm dreaming here but it would be cool to have Toyota drop a small V8 in the truck. Nothing gargantuan but something somewhat advanced and hella reliable. None of that iForce V8 garbage. Those were the worst.

Not worth the time or money, if you want the 3.5 just buy the new truck, plus you will have the 6 speed.... Most of the power issues with the 4.0 is that it runs too way too lean, but mpg peaks out around 17-19 hwy with 32s and an auto and maintaining good power.... the 3.5 has a broader power range but the 4.0 will have more torque but the 3.5 will have more HP, so do you want more mid range or top end???

Get an intake spacer and a MAF CAL if you want better low end.... you will drop up to a second off 0-60 and have much better part throttle power.... Right now running 75-80 with 32s and a 2 1/2" lift I get 18 mpg hwy and my truck runs 7.05 0-60 and I'm still tuning....

All engines from the factory run overly rich, as rich is safe. Impossible to blow your engine being a bit rich, being a bit lean can cause huge problems.

Well you have manufacturing tolerances some people run rich some lean but overall if you put an intake and exhaust on you will probably be lean at low rpm and rich at full throttle..... and they just eat gas...... that's why you need a tuner to sort it all out.....
easy test, if an intake doesn't add power you're running lean if it helps you were rich.... that's why you see so many mixed reviews on intakes and exhaust.....

Not true, you guys need to read the write ups on the MAF CAL, it's called a calibrator because it needs to be calibrated....

You have +/- tolerances on all the electronics I think 15 or 20% to same money, if your components are all on the - side you're lean, if they are all on the + side you're rich, if you have some + and some - you're right on.... In closed loop the truck is "trying" to maintain 14.7 to 1 in open loop it runs about 10 to 1, but you need to be in the 13 to 12 range for the most power..

I'm just trying to help other people get the most from their Tacoma, but go learn for yourself. If you think I'm wrong then leave your truck stock and complain about the factory compromises or like me, fix the problems one by one and make a good truck great.....

Funny thing about that over in Miata world............

The LSx conversion isn't much harder or more expensive to pull off than the 13B :D

I was just thinking in terms of being fuel efficient.
And I love the current body style.

I heard this is a new version of the 3.5L engine that's used in Lexus vehicles, like the ES350? Nice responsive engine. Not worth that much money to drop it in a 2nd gen though.

You seem to be one of the sharper tools in the shed here..........

Ever considered a Gear Vendor OD unit in one of these rigs? Thinking that might give a bit of MPG to the big hwy users, or at least offset any losses from a gear change that seems to follow big wheel/tire packages.

dunno if they make a GV OD unit for the taco 6 speed.... and even if they did... the cost of the unit would and ever so slight increase in mpgs would make for a break even point YEARS down the road.

Though it would be cool to split gears.

Not the same, but similar. If I'm not mistaken it's the same block and they share a lot of technology, like the dual injection and dual VVT. They should produce similar numbers, but the Tacoma engine will have a completely different top end designed and built for truck use.
