Finally snagged a dedicated bike for the trainer.
Not in the same universe as the piece of art @CTSpruceMica has, but the fanciest road bike I've had. Trek 5200. I think one of my mountain bike wheels weighs more than this thing(not really, but, it's super light)... and it's outdated!
Got a boatload of reward dollars at REI, so, I guess I'm gonna use them for some shoes and cleats, and give the clipless a whirl.. in a controlled environment....

Edit, I have no idea why R E I is hyperlinked....

The 5200 is wise before its years. Easily would keep up with my giant from 2020. The cranks are kinda meh but absolutely 0 things wrong with them.

If the brifters are in good shape then you got a nice ride there.

I have SPD SL right now, but my wife wants to have a dual use platform and clip less pedal on her bike. I'm due for shoes and cleats, as well, so I'm jumping ship to SPD so we're on the same system. If you want my SPD SL pedals they're yours. I'll offer my cleats too - 6 degrees and couple hundred miles on them, so they're kinda worn, but those are pretty cheap to come by.

Definitely good to learn inside. The first time you can't get your foot out you panic. The second time you just laugh on the way down because you realize just how ridiculous the situation is. You come to a stop and then just....topple over. The first one is scary the second one you're just along for the ride and already laughing.

Edit for more - that bike is lighter than mine by over a pound. That's insignificant on a couple miles, but 30+, you'll notice that!

Check out Fooker pedals. They’re SPD on one side and platform on the other. I’ve had a set on my trainer since I got it and they’re holding up.

It's downstairs next to the 2 oil tanks....:crapstorm:

It already has SPD pedals an stuff on it.
Has Flight Deck blisters. Run UP the cogs, was missing the pawls a bit initially. Did it again later , and it was working. Guessing the grease is built up a bit, and it was still super cold. If it does it again, I'll de-grease them, and lube again.

Almost seems a shame to have this stuck on a trainer... but.. I haven't ridden a road bike in years, hence how you ended up with my old 1220. And I don't see myself doing that anytime soon.
Was getting frustrated trying to find one... I think I did okay.

Funny enough, that's where mine lives also. No windows, in a dirty basement with field stone walls but at least it has a concrete slab! And forget it if someone uses the hot water and the boiler kicks on, I can't hear a thing and the heat return lines are right overhead so things get warm in a hurry!

Mine is between air handler, and oil tanks. Granite foundation with slab.
Boiler is Biasi w/Rialto, so pretty quiet. In fact, the air handler ,and be louder. All the piping is contained into the center of the basement, so, stays cool, even in summer.

Been chipping away at the 3rd floor, and the basement since I've been mobile after the surgery. To the extent I can direct my oddest kids anyway...
Trying to thin stuff out, and, maybe, finish unpacking/moving in... but... not too sure on that at the moment.

How do you guys move 20' things? I have to get 2x 20 foot sticks of steel home next week. Itll be dom tube so not floppy.

One option is cutting it in the parking lot or having them cut it. I am also thinking of a single ladder rack in the back of the bed then over my roofrack.

Ladder rack, like you mentioned, or a trailer. Last time I moved 20' pipe, it was top rail for a chain link fence. I couldn't cut it down so I rented a flat bed trailer. If cutting is an option and you don't need the length, I'd go that route but you'd likely have to get it into thirds to make it manageable in the bed.

I feel ya. Mine's (not a trainer but...) against the garage wall. I actually need to check the air and see if it's good to go. Hoping to get some (albeit cold) rides in once some of the snow melts. This week's jacked up, but next week looks better.

 nice. SPD or SPD SL? I've never used SPD before, only SL.

Nice. Yeah sounds like a mix of cold and age, but it's also almost 20 years old, so if it's never been maintained, might need some TLC.

You nailed it. I looked it up and the only thing that even makes me think the bike wasn't designed yesterday instead of 2005 is the cranks, and that's just because newer ones are all black, yours are shiny. Plus you have a regular headset. Mine's tapered, the only thing that isn't standardized. Your bike is in the era of "Of course it's that size, that's the size everyone uses, why would we make anything different?"

When you're up for it come on down to the East Bay!

    https://www.dot.ri.gov/travel/bikeri/eastbay.php

99% sure I have that brand on my commuter. Got them for my MTB but kept them for my commuter.

I found whatever this brand is on Amazon for her. I'll probably end up with Shimano egg beaters, I don't want platforms on my road bike. She uses hers for a catch all, I have a flat bar commuter I use for that :)

or That hitch extender still likely wouldn't deal with 20' sticks though. :notsure:

Yeah I may try to do some math to get the cuts I need. But 20 foot actually sounds kind of manageable on ladder racks + roof rack when the truck is 18 ft.

Not going to be heavy, only 80 lbs.

If you get egg beaters, make sure you have a shoe with a stiff sole. I'm using these on my gravel bike.
They have a small platform to offer some support in case you need to get going without being clipped in. For the short time I ran clips on my mountain bikes, I was running Shimano Saints which have almost a full platform and traction pins to really keep your foot locked in on rough stuff. I now only run flats on my mountain bikes and clips on the gravel bike and the trainer.

These are the Fookers I have on my trainer and one of my other 'casual bikes' that i use for cruising with the kids. They have Shimano SPD clips on one side and just a flat pedal on the other so I can ride with any shoes.

    Ladder rack on my van...

Not sure to be honest. Digging showed cleat, 98A, which I found to be SPD...

I'll scope my options. I don't even have a spare set of flats kicking around, but, I like to hybrid options now that I'm looking...

    Nice. I like options....

Good spot, that's pretty much what she's looking for! I'll get a set of those.

Left is SPD, right is SPD SL.

    upload_2024-1-18_9-41-43.jpg

You won't find SPD SL hybrid options. I mean, you might, but I wouldn't use them

They're nice for city riding, commuting, a lot of stop and go. SPD SL is used more for road bikes because they're lighter and give more surface area. A stiff shoe on SPD and you're fine, though.
