Hey @BadDNA @deanosaurus @Simon's Mom how y'all faring up in VT? Seeing the pictures coming out of NEK is bananaland, a year after last years bananaland. This year looks worse. Hope all is going well for y'all!

Yeah I saw a video of Moss glen falls in stowe and it was nuts.

 

We live on high ground so we're safe, but some of the villages around us really got hit bad. Thanks for checking in.

 

Me personally, zero impact except closed roads. They got them cleared pretty damn quick though, I think because people knew to stay out of the way and there aren't many out of towers right now.

I can't help but think that the benefit of a century house, what you're buying with the labor, is that it has already been good enough through century events.

The lot isn't huge but the siting is either a very happy accident or the planning of a very skilled builder.

Re: that labor I mentioned earlier about the ramp I was building. The stoop framing was still fairly sound, the steps themselves were not stellar, so after bashing up a very nasty prototype/fitting exercise from scrap, I got down this AM and snabbed 2x6x12s at an extremely reasonable price.

Yeah, I see a lot of videos of inspectors going to "new construction" and finding headaches. I figure I want the headaches that have had time to settle. I have to sister the joists in my crawl space, that's a big one. However all the "smaller" things adding up on our potential list - makes me think we might just bulldoze it and start fresh, cost wise it might actually make the most sense

 

We are lucky lucky lucky. The last two owners did the butt-ugly expensive stuff. The foundation retro is absolutely top notch, the framing is sound, and a clean-new electric rewire/plumbing in the last 10 years. It makes me not mind too much when I do find a dammit lurking somewhere. I know the pain you're sitting with on your end though, if you don't have enough free labor of the right sorts, things add up very, very quickly.

I had to Google, 'metal box on wheels' after seeing this in Portland, Maine.

I honestly thought I was having a seizure when I saw this metal box thing driving down Commercial Street in Portland. I whipped my very common Kia Sorento around and went after it. I got behind it.

I figured it had to be some type of Tesla. Who else would make something so incredibly odd. I decided to follow it to get a good look.

Yup. Google confirmed that it was indeed a Tesla Cybertruck (also named one of the weirdest-looking vehicles ever made). Oh, and of course they aren't cheap. The price of the 2024 Tesla Cybertruck starts at $81,895 and goes up to $101,985 depending on the trim and options, until the rear-wheel-drive Cybertruck arrives for the next model year with a starting price of $62,985. Damn near a bargain!

I had pulled off the main street into an alley in the Old Port, got out to snap these pics, and as the car/truck/metal box drove by these two women across the street, I stared at it too. I yelled across the street,

What the hell is that? Are we in a sci fi movie?

They laughed. I went down a bit of a cybertruck rabbit hole. It's made of ultra-hard stainless steel, isn't painted, and won't chip. Think the windows would shatter? Nope. Go ahead and throw a baseball 70mph at the windows. Nothing will happen.

Oh, and it goes 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds. I guess that's important if you want to avoid those fastballs. It was not a Mainer sporting this weird truck thing. It had Jersey plates.

I’ve had this exact conversation with my wife. I’m thinking 10 year plan. So far I do think it makes the most sense but we would have to wait until the last brat moves out to lessen the headache that is construction.
I would also be looking at some of the prebuilt stuff but my location isn’t crane friendly.
