Too blown is where the shaft goes in and out with zero resistance. It’s all used up, leaking all over the place. Hotdog down a shock body

Hmmm.... i wanna say clapped is a lower level of... wear and tear?

I mean, I've bought clapped out bikes, and such... but, never consider a blown out one...

I dunno.... I guess it's all in perspective

Been working on the guest room at the real house. I don't have any before of the walls/ceiling because I was frankly just trying to get them done. Take my word for it - it was bad.

Anyway, the paint save some dammits, cutting the top of the baseboards and trim, and the floor is done. I've been fighting the closet door for a while.

The paint was the same as the hallway door and the trim but for some reason it had terrible adhesion, and when I went to start taking the top layer off, big chunks of multiple layers of latex came off, and that's when the side quest started.

    20241105_103910.jpg

Here it is with the bulk of the latex stuff (5-6 layers) cooked off, and me realizing how much labor it was going to take to get the definition back out of the original beading in the four panels.

    20241105_133914.jpg

Lots of work with a freehand box knife and 60 grit rolls.

    20241105_133937.jpg 20241105_124537.jpg

I put in as much labor as I cared to do, and got it sanded for paint and painted.

    20241106_154232.jpg 20241106_154257.jpg

Meanwhile, the door hardware, while old and solid, was mid century reproduction Eastlake style stuff - stamped steel brass plated and then later in its life lacquered black. I wire wheeled everything and set about with the treatment I decided to give it.

    20241109_111003.jpg 20241109_133812.jpg 20241109_133804.jpg 20241109_133819.jpg

Parallel to this was the rehab of the floor register, before and afters as follows. Again, a solid piece, but a very good mid century stamped model and not, say, an original casting that I felt was worth preserving or correctly restoring.

Now that the door is off of the floor, I can take care of a few mysterious 6mm dents in the ceiling that have nothing to do with the 35 6mm plastic Airsoft BBs I found in the register, and get the new ceiling light installed. I have a couple of cast brass bulkhead lights from some ancient freighter. I had one all the way apart to see what would be involved in safely wiring them for an Edison bulb, and found that they had perfectly functioning ceramic Edison sockets in them that I was able to stick some THNN onto, along with a ground added via a self tapper in the fixture body.

Are you sure that’s all latex? Careful with heat and sanding, that could be lead paint. It looks old enough.

That's with the latex mostly off - it was layers of white and beige, you can see the two panels still have yet to be heated and scraped. The older "malaise green" that you're seeing was, surprisingly, not leaded according to a test stick. It was very thin and sat on top of a very thin primer. I think it may actually have been milk paint put on in the 70s, based on the color. Same with the heat register, but some kind of enamel.

You’re on it, good that you’re using a test stick, you don’t want to heat and sand that stuff! I have similar doors in my house but it was definitely lead-based. I used a chemical stripper to de-lead my old doors and moldings.

The photos don't do the light justice - it puts a nice warm glow really evenly through the whole room. 100% worth the couple hours of tinkering to adapt it and mount it.

There are some touchups around the new fixture, but i'll take care of those when I take care of the couple other ceiling dammits

The tops of the baseboards need cut, but I'm going to make my sister the actual master painter do that. The plaster texture makes my novice hands nervous. Other than that, done and I'm happy with it.
