Just a random question, but does anyone in our area do good custom fabrication? I've been thinking about a rear light bar with the appearance of a roll bar, but something that uses the tracks in the bed.

I think A.R.E. spoiled me by the use they find in them. I hate shit that drills into the bedrail.

Kai, check out Stinkys Off Road. He's in NH and built a totaly removable rack for a Tacoma using the bed rails with no drilling. Here's a link to his past build page. Look about half way down for the Tacoma rack. http://stinkysoffroad.com/?page_id=2

Today was the first day I looked under the hood since the last time I went offroading. I have dirt everywhere, even on the underside of the hood. What's the best way to clean it out? I'd wouldn't think attacking it with a garden hose is the best solution...

I quite literally took all the panels off the front of my truck. Got real familiar with everything, how it goes on, how it comes off and cleaned the crap out of the engine bay. In the process took tons of measurements and notes on where there are threaded holes for bolts and what not. It was actually really fun, and the front end comes apart with minimal effort. In the process made templates for a plate bumper I plan to build in the near future.

The actual cleaning was a hose, some soap, and a bristle brush, and some awkward positions to get the little nooks where crap builds up. Took all the skid plates off... Made a couple days of it.

I'm kinda anal when I start something like that.

I just want to make sure I'm not going to ruin anything with the hose. I also want it clean so when I do something like change the spark plugs, I'm not knocking dirt into the cylinders.

As long as you keep the hose away from the intake (obviously) and at a really low pressure, like the shower setting on the multi spray nozzles, you shouldn't cause any problems. Engines are designed to get a little wet, if they weren't, the bottom of the car would be sealed. Just be conscientious of where you spray the water. I took precautions to take off the air filter, and seal the intake with the hefty bags and duct tape. Just in case. Mainly so I could clean my filter box.

Try and keep the hose away from the battery box... That's about it.

Yikes - so the shop got it back into alignment but thinks I bent something in the steering (rack and pinion). He couldn't find anything externally but had to use almost all the threads on the steering arm.

He said it should be fine but if I hit it good again that it would most likely need to be replaced (~$1k job). Sounds like I need to take it easy.
