Quick fix: Find the lowest corner (elevation wise) of the slab. And then do this: http://www.wikihow.com/Install-a-Basement-Sump

Long term: Work with step dad.

That's a nice set-up. Pretty sweet the garage slab is lower than the basement slab! We installed a perimeter drain and sump system on the inside of the footing of my house when I was a kid after the house flooded. That project was hell.

Did you do the french drains yourself? Cut the slab around the perimeter?

The voice of reason. Your right, but its so damn cool!

Wow, that much downtravel with that much lift, thats what i want!

Only problem is that it pools up in like 5 or 6 different areas, none are much deeper than others, i think the water is coming in all over the place. Good idea though

I wouldn't cut the whole perimeter of your basement. If you install a sump pump properly, it should prevent water from getting high enough to pond in the basement. Where is the house? If it's on sand, you don't need a perimeter drain, just a sump pump. If you're in thick, clay soil, water doesn't transfer through it very well so a perimeter drain or multiple sump pumps might be a good idea.

Well, my father in law is now banned from my truck haha..I don't believe the passenger side has a child safe door that can't be opened from the inside. He's getting really bad with the Alzheimer's and tried to open the door Tuesday. He was in rare form, called me a few good ones too..I should have just thrown my 900 lb strap over him and winched him down in the bed.

That stinks, I'm sorry to hear! You can disconnect the cable so the passenger door would be child proof but I'm not sure you'd want that full time (might drive your wife nuts and not exactly safe).

Thx man. I remember my old Datsun came unhooked some years ago, that was fun learning how to fix that. Not 100% sure but I believe Linda's Rav4 has the child safe in the rear doors. As it is I figure it's probably safer to have him in the rear seat in case he decides to grab the steering wheel or something.

In no real order he went for the door, punched my dashboard, asked me a bunch of times why I'm trying to kill him, told me to F off, called me an a-hole..the list keeps on going.

No I hired a company. They dug up about a 12" trench and installed the system. We have been dry ever since. We did get water in the bathroom once or twice but the ssystem didnt cover that part . I just added more to it when i did the demo of the basemant bathroom. When I am in garage for storm like we have been having you can hear the water filling the sump

I dont think there is much clay, but water doesnt drain very well around my house. The property is surrounded by streams and ponds, behind the house in the woods there is a large area that floods all the time. So what your saying is a sump pump, down below the slab will help prevent the water level in the ground rising enough to flood the basement, even 50 feet away on the other side of the basement....in theory haha
