I've done it a while ago, but still went through a body shop. The inspector checked out the car at the body shop, cut the shop a check for repairs and the shop owner gave me the check. I would imagine the insurance company would give you a check for the value of the damage.

John, I would talk to the insurance company. It is my understanding that, even after they cut you a check, it is your decision as to whether or not you want to actually make the repairs. I believe if you just tell the guy you want to make the repairs on your own, they'll just cut you the check and be done with it. Even if you just take the cash and don't do anything, there's nothing wrong or illegal about it.

Depends if you own the vehicle or not. If you own it and have the title then they should make the check out to you directly. You can bring it to a body shop for a estimate, but there is no reasons for them to make the check to the body shop. If there is still a loan on it then they make the check out to you and the lien holder. It is up to you what you do with the money once you get the check, but if there is a lien on it then that bank has a interest in the vehicle and usually will not sign the check until the work is completed or they will sign it over to the repair shop.

Thanks for the info . They called me and said they are going to cut me a check for the $585 that the appraiser quoted . And if I go through a shop and the price to fix goes up they will cut me a check for the difference .

What was the quote for, new bumper cover and labor to install?

Take it through a car wash and see if any of the lights either the fogs or the headlight is leaking. I got a very light knock on the passenger side, didn't even dent, and it was enough to make the fog light start taking on water. That's something that could have been easily overlooked.

nothing illegal about it but when you do the repairs you have to have it checked afterwards. If you dont do the repaires then they take that money off if the truck is ever total in another accident.

You have to be in a club . I believe . I can look into it but I'm pretty sure it's not open to the public . Maybe Eric or Fran know more on it .

Thinking about it but I don't think I want to join a club just yet. I have a car payment now, and making minimum wage sucks!
