Read somewhere that they are sealed and you can't. Wouldn't surprise me... Fuck if I'm buying a $100 sensor because a $1 battery took a dump.

    Alright folks,

Planning on changing my oil this week and need some input. For you DIY guys, other than an OEM filter which I plan to buy at the local Toyota Dealer, do you just go to Autozone and get a large bottle of oil? Planning on using Mobil-1 synthetic. Not sure if anywhere is cheaper than any other place.

My free oil changes finally ran out.

The plan is to put my sensors in a wheel barrel tire, pump it up and see if the truck recognizes them. If not, I'll just stick to regular valve stems and possibly have Alex remove the dummy light from my dash.

Would this mess with your inspections when they plug the OBD scanner in?

I buy the "5+" jugs at Autozone. They're like 5.1 or 5.2 quarts but I just empty the entire jug into the engine and it puts my oil level just under the full mark. Last time I went, it was actually cheaper to get a Bosch filter with the Mobil 1 jug than it was just to buy the oil.

Thanks! Problem is, after I do my little experiment, the truck will only tell me that there is an issue with one or more of the sensors. I have no way of knowing which one is no longer functioning and I'm still not paying a dealership $100 to reprogram my truck to recognize them (I hate that whole system anyways). :)

Nope, I've passed 2 inspections so far with the light on (just did it last week actually). The TPMS system doesn't throw a code in the ECU.

WalMart is the largest seller of Mobil 1 in the USA, and they nearly always have the best prices on the 5 qt. jugs. I HATE shopping there, but I sneak in through the tire department and buy oil when I need it for my V6. If you have a 4-cylinder, I would buy oil from the dealer.

Mike, any reason to buy it from the dealer? I do have the 4-banger

There's the problem, if only it told you which tire and rim to inspect like some Chevy vehicles it would be easier.

Or... here's a novel idea... LET ME CHANGE THE FUCKING BATTERY!! I'd change them all while I have them out. I think the Toyota code reader will actually tell you which ones are active.

I buy the 5quart jug and a 1 quart single . And I use Mobil 1 filter . Walmart most likely has the cheapest price . I just go to autozone because it's closer to my house .

You're missing out! I love that 5+ quart jug they came out with. No more eye-balling and no singles. Dump the whole jug in, put all the spent oil back in the jug and return it (usually with about a quart less than I started with )

To the best of my understanding, the Toyota 0W-20 (this is the specified oil, isn't it?) is a special formulation made only for Toyota. It is made by Mobil, and the formulation is sufficiently different that Mobil 1 is not the best choice.

I have a theory about how this came to be, which is that the hybrids cool down too much when the engine shuts down during stop-and-go driving for a standard 0W-20 to work right. The Toyota oil is supposedly thinner at lower temps, making hybrid restart easier on the electric motors. In your truck, this translates to easier cold cranking, better oil flow at startup, and a quicker transition to full flow through the filter media instead of the high-pressure bypass.

This is only a theory, of course. It could have happened any other way. The fact remains, though, that The Toyota oil is different, and it's properties seem more desirable to me than off-the-shelf Mobil 1.

I haven't had sensors in my tires in years. They used to be in the garage in another set of tires so the light would reset every night. Now, I only have one set and the sensors aren't in them so the light stays on. I'm debating whether or not to just put the sensors in and whatever happens, happens or just keep using valve stems. This is just like the door locks to me though, stupid $1 part that I can't replace forces you to buy a very expensive part.
