Awesome! Our local police are the same, they are great to deal with.

Not sure about in MA, but around here it depends on the town. If there's a local station, then it tends to be pretty quick and painless. If you're in a town without a local police force, the state police handle it, and it takes forever.
My first CCW permit I had a response in two weeks. When I moved to a new town (w/out a local station) and had to change the address on my permit it took 5 months to get a new permit with the updated address back from the staties.

In MA, you submit through the town but some towns will restrict you right off the bat. The applications then have to get sent to the state for approval. When I got mine, I went in to get the application, the dispatcher called the Sergeant and he took me into his office and we went through the whole thing right then and there. I was planning on taking the app., reviewing it and bringing it back in a few days but nope, took about 20 minutes, then he sat and shot the shit with me for another 30 or 40 minutes!

If you guys think MA is bad, you should see the process you have to go through to get an LTC in NY (and not the city). My dad has been going through it for years now and still doesn't have it.

MA is town by town, and the licensing officer has complete control over whether they want to give them out/ renew them or not. They have the discretion to not issue one at all, or issue a restricted one if they don't like what you're wearing, or any other arbitrary criteria they feel like coming up with. Some towns won't issue them at all, some will issue restricted shooting ranges only, etc.. We have 3 classes of firearms license here, FID, B, and A. FID you can purchase/ own low capacity shotguns/ rifles and pepper spray. Class B enables you to also purchase handguns with 10rds or less magazine, but no concealed carry allowed. Class A allows purchase of high capacity rifles/ shotguns/ handguns but may be restricted to no concealed carry, restricted uses to hunting/sporting etc.., or unrestricted which permits concealed carry.

I'd be unsurprised to learn that the shooting the shit was a conversational interview to help determine whether you would get the permit or not.

    Yeesh. Restrictive.
Around here you can buy whatever if you're not a felon, regardless of capacity or design (full autos are not allowed without a special permit, obviously). You can carry it around openly without a permit, but if you want to conceal it then you need a permit for that.
Personally, open carry just screams "I'm compensating for something!" normally, and screams "Shoot me first!" if there's ever a robbery or whatever, so I opted for the permit.

Nope, my application was already submitted to the state at that point (it's all electronic and I watched him send it in). He was very much pro-2A. I would suspect that it was him trying to get a feel for my personality as I would be a potential firearms owner in his town. I live in a small town and the people who live there seem to all be very friendly, I think he was just trying to get to know me :)

    oooohhhh.....Electronics. That's fancy.
Our's is all paper, and snail mail. Mucho Slow.
You fill out a paper app, and mail it in to the State Police. They receive it, throw it in a huge pile of other waiting apps, and then open it a couple months later. They then mail a request to the state records office for your criminal background check and a mental health record. The response is then delayed by the janitor spilling coffee on the original request, requiring the state police to resubmit their request. The response is sent back via snail mail to the state police, who then lose it behind a filing cabinet for another month. A secretary discovers it while she's bent over said filing cabinet doing the dirty with the sergeant, and puts the file back into rotation. The state police finally open the response to their request (which states your model citizenship). They then approve your permit request and send the file over to the secretary for her to type up a paper card for you. She sees a spider, panics, and spills coffee all over her typewriter. They send the typewriter out for a cleaning, and a week later she gets it back and completes your permit. She puts the permit into an envelope and mails it to you, but the mailman loses the envelope at the bottom of his bag for three weeks before discovering it and delivering it to your mailbox.

They really did the guys justice in the film. I think Marky-Mark was intent on that.
