I spent about 3x that on core drilling bits when I was in Richmond. Does that count?

They vary depending on the diameter. The 2" ones were $75ish, the largest we could run was 12" diameter but I never had to buy one of those. The common ones I bought were the 3 and 6" ones and they were $4-500/ea.

The wife and daughter are doing the last college tour tomorrow. I can't make this one, for whatever reason BSU does theirs during the week at 3pm.

    No...
I limited myself to about $150 in various wood, concrete, and general purpose bits, and a Drill Doctor. I also picked up a set of Forstner bits at a yard sale for $10 a couple of summers ago
The bits I got are upper-middle of the road, and whenever I do manage to dull one up I just run it through the DD and we're back in business. I don't do precision machining or anything like that, so I figured I didn't need a super high-quality set. :notsure:

I'm sure Alex would be happy to help your daughter look at schools, Billy...

Good so far. I've only had to resharpen a few of the bits so far. If you plan on a drill doctor, don't waste money on the "titanium" bits since it's just a titanium coating (and you'll take it off the first time you sharpen them!). I went with a good set of carbide bits instead, and I honestly don't notice a difference in how well they cut.
But the DD is quick and easy to use, and it beats the hell out of buying new bits piecemeal to replace the ones I've dulled up.

Just make sure you RTFM when you get it, otherwise you'll wreck your bits. I set it the diamond wheel the way I thought it should be, and if I hadn't double-checked it by reading the instructions I'd have trashed the first bit I stuck in it.

I had an index of viking drill bits. I think they were in the 300 range somewhere. My dad took them when I moved and gave me crappy harbor freight ones because he has a sweet drill press.

I stay here for 2 weeks every summer with the wife's family. Awesome place right on the ocean.

That is a nice little place - My parents live just down the road and I grew up riding my bike through those roads. If you are there, just make sure not to walk on the other side of Lower County at night (past Sunday School) - it has turned to a druggies paradise over there :/

Sad how run down my childhood place has become. But that section of beach is always nice and the Sound side keeps the waves and winds to a minimum.
