I'm having a brain fart here...hopefully someone here can help me clear it up.

I bought some LED lights for a bed light project. I want to be able be able to switch them on via a rocker switch and I want them to turn on when the tailgate is down. I plan on tapping the running light of the tail light with a small inline fuse for protection.

Now...if I want to do this with a SPDT switch, I'd have to put the switch on the negative side of the circuit, correct?

Thus it would be as follows:

+12V LED strip connected directly to +12 of tail lamp running light.
-12V of light to middle pole (Pole 3) of SPDT switch.

Pole 1 - directly to chassis ground
    Pole 3 - to door/hood pin

In theory if the switch is set to "ON", the ground goes through the switch directly to ground and illuminates.

If the switch is set to "Tailgate", when the tail gate is open the door pin grounds and the light turns on.

I know it's not preferable to switch the ground, but with a small LED draw with a small inline fuse, am I going to run into any issues?

The reason I am tapping the tail light power is that I really only plan on needing the lights on when it's dark and typically if I'm loading the truck, I'd have the ignition on (or I can at least turn it on using my remote start) and it greatly condenses the wires that I have running through the chassis of the truck.

I know that in theory I could just use only the door switch and turn them on every time I drop the tailgate or just have them on a switch so they only turn on when I have the switch on, but I thought this might give me the best flexibility.

I have an email into OTRATTW in regards to a Carling style switch that's weatherproof. We shall see.

Sooo after many months of searching I think I finally found my Taco not sure on the year but its a SWB access cab. I would prefer a DC but a full size bed is a must and I've had no luck finding a good DCLB I like

Just tanked up the truck this morning, and averaged 18.5mpg this tank, over 170 miles. Not bad, considering 140 miles of it was towing a trailer (roughly 70 loaded and 70 empty).
My '99 was lucky to get 14 towing any kind of weight, and it had a lot harder time pulling away from stoplights.:woot:

Just as well. Access cabs look cooler anyhow, and the DCLB is a land yacht.

I use braid on all my casting setups except for my stock trout rod. One thing to be aware of, braid is much, much stronger than mono or flouro for the same thickness and you may want to use a 2' leader of flouro. If you fish in heavy cover areas or weedy lakes, bass fishing and dragging your baits, you can lose a lot of line if you get snagged. I tie a small leader of flourocarbon just so I can break it off if I get snagged. My baitcaster has 50lb Power Pro braid on it for the diameter, so if I get snagged I have to cut it off at the boat. That stuff is not cheap and I'd like as little of it as possible to end up in the lake.

I use to do the same thing untill I switched over to co-polymer fishing line. It has all the qualities of Braid, Floro and Mono and casts like a dream...like you jetho I had to use a high test when I put it on my bait caster due to its similar diameter as braid.

here is the stuff I use

I have not used the co-polymer stuff yet. It has no memory at all like braid? That's the only reason I love the braid, zero memory. But the downfall I found, especially on the baitcaster since I have to use the bigger diameter, it doesn't cast as far- I think because of the weight? I will have to try some!

very little memory, I will tell you this though it took me a while to get the settings right on my black max bait caster to avoid the bird nests...to be honest I think I will go back to floro for that real but on a spinner it works like a charm and casts far. plus you will be surprised how much the line disappears under the water

these are two i caught before I left VA, both the striper and blue were caught with 8 pound test co polymer line with no leader what so ever, and if you have ever fished for blues or stripers around heavy structures you know what they can do to a line

and just a tip because it has a really silky feel the best knot to use on it is the palomar knot
