I have to try some more from Jack's Abby. Their Hoponius Union was pretty good.

Took a picture of the sunflowers in the front boxes at my house this morning:

They're starting to develope flower heads, so I wanted to get a 'bragging rights' shot of them before the weight of the blossoms starts keeling them over, haha!

So far the only shandy I've had I didn't like. Too sweet for beer.

Leinenkugel is ok but the shocktop one is better. I brought a case of angry orchard and a case of the shocktop summer shandy when I went away with the guys cause they are easier to get down in the am (hair of the dog). The smithwicks is heavy enough I cant do alot of them so my go to was the regular shocktop and yuengling light

Noel what do you use the sunflowers for. People I mmy neighborhood have them but they just seem to be left to die at the end of summer

    Don't know that I have a secret...
The bricks from the house warm up the soil in those front boxes nice and early in the season, so they don't have any problem germinating, and I refresh the garden with a truckload or two of manure in the fall, work it in to the soil with some lime, and let it set all winter.
The soil stays a little drier than the rest of the garden, just because the house blocks the rain a little. Maybe that's it? My hot peppers seem to do best in that location, maybe for the same reason.

The variety that I plant does one massive blossom, usually 8-16 inches across. So you get really big fat seeds. I cut the flower heads off when the seeds are ripe, let them dry for a week or so, and pull the seeds out. Then I soak the seeds overnight in salt water and roast them in the oven, and eat them, same as the sunflower seeds you can buy at the store.

Any heads that don't get big enough for that treatment (like if they get frosted too early or something) we leave out for the songbirds.
