I've done the math, I don't really spend enough on fuel to outweigh the cost of buying, insuring and paying excise tax on another vehicle. My fear with buying a $1,500 vehicle would be maintenance cost. I wouldn't mind picking up one of those new Polaris Slingshots though

I have two solid front CV axles, 33's and a sunroof.

 

I hear you . Insurance for me would be just collision , no excise tax up here and I'd change the oil that's about it for maintence lol . More of a drive it till it blows up and then bring it to the scrap yard for a could hundred bucks .

I can remove my sunroof and the top .

Morning all..time to head up to VT for our yearly home made maple syrup run...nothing like having your own dealer.....

 

I'd still never own one unless it came with that Italian chick from the commercials. If I were to own something that small, I'm going for something open air that is actually meant to be a toy. I am seriously considering that Slingshot.

 

If they didn't have a sunroof, I wouldn't fit in them.

None of my friends who had VWs of the vintage you're looking at have had any luck with them as far as the electrical system is concerned (to echo what has already been said).

If you're looking for something cheap, I'd go the Corolla/Civic route. You might pay more, but you'll get a lot of car for your money.

Honestly, back when the Nissan Versa 1.6 was selling for $9,999 MSRP and I was looking at positions that were a hike I did the math and it wasn't particularly unfavorable to finance one. My thought at the time was it was brand new with a warranty, so boring I wouldn't consider modding it but still brandy new.
