On my Tacoma, I currently run studded General Altimax artic in size 265/75-16s. They are great on plowed/packed roads and on ice. Deep snow not so good as the treads tend to clog causing the fronts especially to float around. My Wife's car runs that same tire, studded as well, in a narrower size and those are completely different in the way they handle deep snow. That car (Subaru Forester XT) is unstoppable (except when you want to stop ) with those tires on it.

I used to run Cooper STs on my former 3/4 ton truck size 255/85-16s. Those were studded as well and handled all conditions really well as the tread width is narrow making them bite in well.

    Total fail!

After chasing my tail for way too long, I discovered that there is no reasonable way to modify a 2001 4Runner to flat-tow behind my motorhome. I had to back out of the sale. I need something with auto trans, 4 doors, and a traditional mechanical transfer case, with a curb weight under 5,000 pounds. I would like to keep it under $10K, and still not be a rust bucket. There seem to be very few options.

Why not just get a dolly for the rear wheels to ride on, and pop it into neutral for the tow?
Or you could put the front wheels on the dolly, unbolt the rear of the drive shaft and ratchet strap the shaft to the frame and you'd be good to go. :notsure:

I'm trying to avoid the hassle of dealing with a dolly everywhere I go. They're not always easy to store, and are targets for theft. I will get one if I have to, but would rather not.

Duratracs FTW. Mine are unstudded but they still grip like crazy in the snow. I pushed fresh snow that was level with the top of the front bumper on this truck with the Duratracs last year on our way out from camp and did not get stuck. I was worried too because we came out of the camp in the morning to a foot of fresh snow and I wasn't sure we'd be able to get out without a lot of shoveling (the camp's about a mile in, with lots of hills in between the camp and the plowed road) but I put it into 4-Hi and it just walked out.
Good road manners, too. A little noisy, but not obnoxious (at least not yet; they've only got about 8K miles on them so far)

I have Hankook I-Pike RW11's in 265/70-16 mounted on TRD OR alloys that have treated me well the past two winters. They're better than my All-Terrains in the slippery stuff, especially with the OR's touchy brakes. I will say on Monday morning when the road was a complete sheet of ice they slipped a bit in 2WD, but they weren't uncontrollable either. I don't think anything short of a studded tire would have helped me.

I don't know if I'll buy another set when they wear out or if I'll try a different brand. I have a feeling I might switch it up and move up to 17" tires and go with either the TRD Sport wheels or the last FJ wheels they released, simply because I'm ridiculous like that. See what I can get for a deal when the time comes. I love how the OR wheels look with RWL tires, but I'm not as big of a fan with black walls. that being said, I'm definitely pleased with how it looks now though. I think there's potential to make a lateral move in wheel price if I decide to change it up.

The 96-04 Pathfinder had a shiftable transfer case. There's a recall on them for the front strut towers, but if you get a solid one it should treat you well. Look at the rear wheel arches and the bottoms of the front fenders for rust.

My Mom had a 98 Pathfinder SE that she traded in 2012 for her Rogue and she said she regretted making the trade. I did as well as at the time I had planned on purchasing it from her for about $1,000. I would have LOVED that truck.

Thanks for the tire input everyone. Good info to think about for the next sneaker purchase.
