Thanks, the one they show is Blackstone. I have one of their kits on the way. Not bad, only $25 for the oil analysis.
Non-issue as the owner/installer will likely install it upside down and under water.
It's the infamous red-X gun. Very common so not worth much.

Is time of the essence? Blackstone has a rapid response program that might work for you.

Figured my fellow People's Republic of Massholechusetts hostages would enjoy this one:
I take my 2006 Highlander in to get a sticker at my local dealer and a little while later the service advisor comes out and tells me everything looks good EXCEPT my passenger side fog light lens is cracked and the vehicle can't pass that way. He then quickly tells me they have the part and in a little while and almost $300 later I'll be all set. So I'm like--"Wait a minute you mean you'll put a red reject sticker (the one that won't let you drive away) for a cracked lens on auxiliary lights?!?!? You've got to be sh**ing me!!!!" Then he tells me by MA law its a safety violation on a vehicle inspection! So he's cool enough to leave my March sticker on and I go grab the part at the parts counter to take home--$132! Anyway after sifting through all the crap I had to pop out of the way I got it done last night for a sticker today. It just seems the law is a bit over the top here, like most MA bs...anyways I saved over $150 anyway...

So you're not even allowed to drive it, or take it back with you, with the reject sticker? I thought that sticker gave you 30 days to get the issue fixed and pass inspection?

I smell bullshit. Fog lights aren't required, they're an option. You can drive at night with them off and be fine..

Guy I worked with was told once that he couldn't get a sticker because the fog light did not work. Think its just a bullshit law.

What if you remove the foglight? It would be no longer equipped, and then shouldn't matter.

My wife woke me up this morning and I said I was gonna call out sick, well after a few minutes I changed my mind... So I get to work and one of my delivery trucks is running, I'm the 1st one in.... After figuring out that the truck has been running since 5pm Tuesday I relized I should have called out like my gut instinct was telling me to. Cause today SUCKED.

I failed last year because I had a fog bulb out. I argued that they're auxiliary lights. I told them to fail me and I'd swap the bulb out and come back. They ended up passing me and told me to fix it with a stern look.

It's the same as how you can get a ticket for having a fog light out while getting a ticket for having them on in non-hazardous conditions.

I have heard that the red "R" is not road legal and you can get ticketed on your way home, but I had never heard they refuse to release the car to you.

I think there would be stories all over the news of local mom and pop stations failing everyone and holding their cars hostage.

When I was a service writer we'd fail a car for something like that, but we wouldn't cut a sticker for it. We'd tell them to get it fixed and bring it back, and supply a quote for what it'd cost if we did the repairs.

Not sure if MA law is different than ME law on this one, but if a vehicle's equipped with a light then it has to be intact & functional to pass for a sticker. A popular low-budget fix around here was to remove the fog light assemblies rather than fix them. Once they're no longer equipped it's a non-issue.
