    That's what you have to do. For a few reasons actually. One, if you always run in the same direction, the weight of the machine will "indent" the ground and then your yard will look and feel bumpy. The other is, when you stop to turn, sometimes the wheel rips up the grass depending on how quick/well you turn of course, so going in a different direction will allow the grass to grow back in those spots.
