Yeah, not really enthused about it.
I managed to get the driveway cleared enough for us to get in and out, but while I was shoving the giant-ass bank that I'd pushed up while I was clearing I apparently found an overabundance of traction. Limped my way back into the driveway as a front wheel drive truck, lol. It's nothing that $25 worth of parts won't fix, but getting that sheared bolt out is going to be a pain. I'll have to weld a nut onto what's left of the broken-off stud and back it out that way, looks like.

Yeah, that's the design, for the straps to fail before the joint. Probably doesn't help that they look to be original, either (I'm sure the strap was thinner/weaker than it should be due to rust). The bolt probably isn't designed to shear, though. I think what happend is that the strap let go and when the joint broke free it slammed the bolt and broke it. But, the joint spit a cap when it popped free, so that's lost in the snow someplace along with its bearings.

Of course, after a stress failure I'd probably have replaced the joint anyway, even if it hadn't lost any pieces. For $15 it'd be worth not having to worry about hairline cracks or fatigue that I can't see. :notsure:

Yeah I knew you wouldn't put it back together with the old joint but like I was thinking the failure point would be the stap/cap. Good luck with removing that sheared bolt

You're right (I think)...I think that the strap was what failed first. You can't really tell from the picture, but how that bolt is sheared it looks like it got snapped by the strap when it broke loose. Or whacked with the U-joint, which accomplished the same thing.

Extraction should be fun. Hopefully the old 'weld a nut onto it' trick works again. Best solution I was ever taught for a sheared bolt.

That's a tough call, though. Obviously they paid EXTREMELY close attention to some of the details, but also completely missed some other details.

Morning all! Once more I envy all of you with a garage. Clearing off the truck today was some serious work. Fell twice on the solid sheet of ice in front of it too. Made it in to work fine though!

I'll be leaving early to ensure I can get a good parking spot when I get home.

My morning started with being locked inside of my house........the storm door was frozen shut. Melted the ice with a hair dryer and escaped. Then could not get into my cap to grab the ice scraper......also frozen shut. Go to wife's car.........trunk also frozen shut. Then I remember there is a second scrapper in her back seat.....door frozen shut........I proceed to douse her car in windshield washer fluid lol. Get it open, then the trunk........cap probably still shut lol.
