Unless you're using sugar water for your transmission fluid, 175 isn't even up to operating temperature, let alone causing damage. Most transmission fluids have an optimal operating temp of around 190-195 degrees. The fluid itself doesn't start getting 'damaged' until you get above 220-ish, when it can start producing varnish.

Hmm, I may want to check the coding for my Ultragauge then because it doesn't take long to get it from 160 to 130. Minute or so.

Well that's good, might be all set then with the factory setup. There is a steep hill climb when i go to bring it home from the dealer so ill definitely be watching the temp there. Hopefully i don't get stuck at the light right at the top of that hill.

If the temperature is registering on the line from the transmission to the cooler, it will vary quite a bit. It's still useful, you just can't freak out when you start seeing immediate drastic swings in the temperature readings because it's not really telling you what's going on inside the transmission.

Also, I partially agree with Noel. A lot of vehicles run their transmissions pretty cool, in the 170 range. Ford now runs theirs to more closely match the engine operating temperature, around 200. Most ATF isn't really in harm's way until you start seeing 230 and up though.

Noel is absolutely right. I didn't know the numbers so I looked them up. ATF doesn't start having a problem to the 220-240 range

Ford (and other manufacturers) is (are) running theirs warmer now because that's where transmission fluid is the most efficient. At the cooler temps that everybody used to run them at the fluid is thicker and costing MPG's. Because of the new push for higher mileage manufacturers are letting them run at the optimal point for good fuel economy without compromising longevity. They've added larger coolers to keep them from overheating, but control the flow through the coolers so that the transmission can actually warm up first.

As long as it's fresh. Old fluid is a crapshoot, obviously, which is why you should flush every 60-70k even if you're just using it as a DD & not working it hard.

Storms, here, were moving mostly north so the hail that we had is going up toward MA.

Nope, you actually know how to drive a manual. I'm referring to people who like to keep one foot on the clutch, you know, to really warm up the clutch to a good, toasty temperature.
Yes, but was referring to different loose screws in this case :D
