Exactly, Rt 2 west of Greenfield is pretty fun. I've driven that one quite a few times when I lived in NY also.

 

The trick is to find one a year or two after they've repaved it. That way it's been down long enough for the extra oil to wash off, but not long enough to start breaking up.

 

I've driven some really nice roads in the Adirondacks, but it was like a couple twisties then straight, then a couple more twisties then straight again. Seemed like you'd have to be going really fast on the bike to get any good lean (I don't need a lecture, people drag knee on the streets all the time in the south)

 

More amusing is following 8A from that back to 116. Not a good driving road, but it's an experience. First, you wonder how it's considered to be a major enough road to have a route number. Second, if you see anyone, they are probably sitting on their front porch in a rocking chair with a shot gun in arms reach, probably wearing some combination of flannel, overalls, and work boots. I don't think they get many visitors.

You have to take the roads perpendicular to those ones that really disappear into the mountains. I know what you're referring to and I do like those drives also just because they're relaxing. On my way to college, there were some nice back roads that had plenty of cutbacks for miles. They were fun on the bike but a pain in the truck and scary in the winter. They were pretty far north and sometimes the potholes more closely resembled tank traps so you had to be careful and take a slow run down the road before really giving it the beans on the way home.

 

I inadvertently drover the Devil's Whip in NC in my Tacoma. What a frustrating experience to have to drive a top-heavy 18 ft long truck without a whole lot of excess power up that. Every time you get back up to speed, you hit another hairpin turn that you need to go 5 MPH around.

Interesting, hadn't heard of that. Been to TOTD and surrounding roads, devil's triangle etc... But not that one. Anything with less traffic than the dragon is nice. Last time I was there a Honda ruckus really was going on. Unless you did the trail at like 7am you were stuck behind packs of those stupid things.

I didn't either, until I looked up the road later to show someone what I had endured.

I got about 5 MPG climbing it. Absolutely beautiful. Lots of neat little tunnels to drive through, good views, but the Tacoma is a fish out of water there!

I didn't see anyone the entire time I was on that road, but it was raining that day.

 

I shit you not there were tons of people with their fat ass significant other riding bitch too. God damn things could barely make it up any of the hills.
