I equate this to me being partial to steak but I wouldn't turn down a pork chop.

Looking forward to the report. I'm looking at temps in the 225-235 degree range when I get into the hills up north and I'd like to bring them a little lower. I'm considering an additional cooler or something like what you're doing.

Fun fact- I've still been averaging 19.5 mpg's and less than 200 degrees towing the boat through mixed terrain. And interestingly, even in Toad Hall mode the truck still utilizes 6th gear (which is a double overdrive) and still doesn't go over 200. I can manually lock it out of 6th, 5th, etc. using the gear selector, but so far it doesn't do it on its own. Probably it monitors the transmission temps and if they climb past a certain point it'll automatically lock out of top gear. :notsure:

Edit- Also, the locking rear diff has been super handy loading and unloading el boato, since you can lock it in even in 2-hi right from the factory. I've had a couple of slippery ramps that I've locked it in for and it's been great. Helps make up for the crappy street slicks I've got on there, lol.

    Oops...

Hopefully it goes well, I got up to 240 when I was bumper to bumper on a steep incline. However I got up to 200 just driving around without a trailer the other day.

I think you're giving tow/haul mode too much credit. It will not lock out certain gears but should hold lower gears longer. One of the things I really like about the tune that I'm running is it acts more like a stick shift. It holds those lower gears longer and is much more willing to downshift under load. Under normal operation, it tries to hold 5th, starts to bog, then drops to 3rd, revs the shit out of it, then back to 5th and repeat. The tune will drop to 4th more quickly and the truck generally has plenty of power to use 4th to power up the hill and hold it's speed.

The shift points are different, and it engine brakes aggressively (like, if I'm going down any sort of incline and I let my foot off the gas it'll downshift if my speed increases by even 1mph). I don't notice any issue with it 'searching' for gears when I'm going up a hill, but I'm not towing a huge load (2500lbs or so, definitely nowhere near the max rating) so it's obviously less of an issue. I push on the throttle approaching a hill and it kicks down a gear or two (depending on my speed) and holds it all the way up, until I let back off the gas.

Edit- I'm surprised that Tow/Haul doesn't lock out 6th, though, because the GF's dad's GMC locks out of OD when you engage Tow/Haul. Also the 3/4 ton Dodges I've driven over the years have done the same thing; push the 'Tow' button and you're locked out of OD. :notsure:

I agree there are other aspects to tow haul mode. Mine will do the same with the more aggressive engine braking. The gear hunting got obnoxious though but it's really only an issue when towing through mountains with long, steep grades. Before the tune, I would put it in manual mode and just do the shifting myself (which I still do at times even now). I like having control and knowing exactly what the truck is going to do. I sometimes really miss having a manual transmission.
