    How much stuff??

I moved to Cali with a 5x8 uhaul behind my 2001 with out too much trouble.... just Wyoming... 40mph head wind meant foot on the floor the truck topped out at 50... don't know what my trans temps were... but still managed to get 12mpg average.

Did I miss something? are you moving to Nashville? Couldn't hack it in NE?

No clue how much stuff yet! We plan on selling off most of our furniture, it is nice, but not nice enough to move across country!

Yeah I could always do it blind, but it seems like the trans cooler and ultra gauge install are simple enough. 12mpg would suck though!

Yeah Molly is going to Vanderbilt for Law School, so I figured I'd move down with her and enjoy some warm weather. We may be back in 3 years, who knows!

Not sure yet. She's just looking at options so far. It would probably have to be fairly small haha

You don't have the factory tow package?

Mine stayed pretty cool with the stock transmission cooler. Most I ever saw was about 210° pulling 5500 lbs up a very long steep road.

Yes I do. I meant to say "install an upgraded trans cooler" haha. My mistake.

For reference --- in the 5x8 uhaul I fit a couple surfboards, couple bikes, all my garage tools and stuff. all my cloth and other gear. flat screen tv, bunch of spare datsun parts, few boxes of wall pictures (bike boxes work well for packing these) and a few rubbermaid tubs and boxes of other stuff. I had no furniture. Stopped in South Dakota to pick up my wife and we added in a 5 drawer tall dresser, night stand and full mattress.

You can fit a surprising amount of stuff in a 5x8 trailer. What I did was section of a part of the living room with painters tape the size of the trailer to start laying stuff out.

Trucks start to get pretty expensive... and moving companies even more.

Pods are another option but not the cheapest. Uhaul does a you pick up pod, fill it and drop it off with them then they move it and you pick it up again on the other side.

I was going to say a V6 4x4 Tacoma without the tow package is a relatively rare bird!

That's more than I would have guessed! Good idea with the tape, I was telling Molly if we wanted to use the bed we would need to buy a bunch of waterproof rubbermaid containers and see how many we can fit, then bring those in and pack things up in them. That way we would have the right amount of waterproof storage.

Since the move is over a thousand miles, everything starts to even out in price. Except hiring movers to do everything for us haha. I'm hoping I'll get relocation assistance from the new company, which would make this all a whole lot easier!

I don’t see why you couldn’t pull an enclosed 8x15 or so trailer with out issues its a good excuse to buy a badass trailer

It's definitely something I'll look into. I'm just not sure if we will be able to fit everything we want to move in there, and if we decide to still ent a truck then the cost probably doesn't make any sense.

I towed with my 2004 2.7L with no tow package for countless thousands of miles. I never understood people insisting on a transmission cooler to tow anything but maybe I was just lucky. That truck went 230k miles on original everything. I don't think I even changed the transmission fluid once. Towed my clamshell with 2 sleds all over the Northeast. Maybe the fact that it was all winter towing made me not need a transmission cooler.

Just watch out with relocation assistance as you'll get taxed on it... when we just moved back from Cali the move itself was pretty expensive... but they hired packers and everything and we moved furniture. What really got us was temp housing though.... that shit was expensive....

Yeah I'm sure the winter towing and the v8 helped! I'm just overly cautious since this is my daily driver haha

That's one approach we are looking at! For sure. Penske, U-Haul, PODs, etc.

Yeah that's true. It is starting to look like the salary I could get there is less of a decrease than the 40% decrease in cost of living, so I may come out on top anyways haha. We are looking at apartments online, and we may even do a sight unseen rental, by us at least. We have family friends in the area who would look at places for us, but unless I get flown down for an interview, we probably wouldn't get to see.

Something that size also maxes out around 2000lbs, so it's not like you were hauling anything absurdly heavy or wind-resistant. The transmission wasn't working too hard, so the fluid didn't have too much heat buildup. The trailer you've got now probably weighs more empty than that whole setup combined.
