There's people in here that haven't even been alive that long yet.

(I only made the cut by 2 years)

1930s for me, and it was a one floor cottage for summer. My upstairs windows when I moved in rattled even in a small breeze..wooden throughout the house. Oh yeah, I don't have heat upstairs either.

This place started out with electric baseboards, then that got ripped out (but they left the wiring) and replaced with HWBB. It's also got woodstoves, the AC unit in the living room wall doubles as an electric heater, there was a propane stove in the living room when we moved in (that I uninstalled and replaced with a pellet unit), and there's wall-mounted electric heaters in the cellar as well.

It's good to diversify, I suppose. I think mine had a fireplace at some point but it's not there now if it was.

I suppose, but it's sort of a cluster. The only ones I really use at all (other than firing them up every few months to burn the dust out) are the Woodstoves and the pellet stove. The pellet stove handles the shoulder seasons and the woodstoves are primary heat. The boiler for the HWBB runs for our hot water, but the baseboards themselves are mostly just dust collectors.

I could see 2 ways if you lose power but agreed that many is a bit much.

Well even if we lose power I still heat the same way (woodstoves). But the old man that owned the house before us was a little off, according to the neighbors, and I think he had so many systems installed because he'd just run whatever was cheapest at a given time. But I doubt he ever saved enough $$ that way to offset the costs of purchase and installation of so many different heat sources.

I had a similar thing going on at my house...It was built in 1954...and in the 1980's a diy contractor owned it and would incorporate things from his work into the house. We had a bunch of renovations done and when they took out one of the sliders it was an interior sliding glass door usually used in hospitals/labs between rooms. It has no insulation, no header and was held in by 4 wood screws..This thing would let snow in through the seam on windy stormy days...uuggh...and when we got the chimney demo'd it had had a chimney fire and was rebricked and filled with concrete...2x the materials when they broke it up. This is what the header over the fireplace looked like when we demo'd the wall [IMG]

I'm not that ambitious for this trip; I'm using an engine. We're loading the Corson up at home so when we get there all I have to do is back it down the boat ramp into the water and we'll be ready to go. Has the dual advantage of carrying more gear than a pair of kayaks and of getting us out to the island considerably faster. Plus it means we can explore a LOT more of the lake. I'm debating on taking the kayaks with us too and just daisychaining them behind the boat for the trip out to the island, so that way we can paddle around if we feel like it. But that's a lot of gear for a 2 night/3 day trip.
