My salary is completely dependant on how much work the shop has and how much I want to/am willing to work. Right now at my hourly rate, depending on how much OT I have available to me or I work (usually do 10 hours OT a week, was doing 15 hours for 4 months straight) I range from 48-55k on a quick calculator punch in

 

How are y'all so comfortable talking about your income?

 

If someone judges me for it then so be it, that's just on the books though...

I have also met about 90% of the people that are regulars in this thread and have a majority of their numbers

After I became a civilian, I kept my pay quiet. Just the way I was raised I guess?
Not judging.

I don't know that I'm happy....I really miss my old job.
As of right now, it's best for us.
More playing the long game so to speak.
Best case, I, heading back to Texas in 3-4 years, debt free.
Worse case, I ride this wave as long as I'm able. Whether to retirement, or unti, I just physically cant anymore, and look to get behind a desk.

 

My mom was always open with me about the finances (she is the breadwinner) but I know plenty of people who don't like to talk about it. Now I am currently talking with the owner of another shop and if I make the move my hourly will go up, but I'm just weighing the options

 

I also think there's a definite line between having an open and honest conversation about money and flaunting. My closest friends and I have open and honest conversations including our successes, frustrations and hopes when it comes to that stuff, but other friends I'd never tell that information to. One of my friends made a point of discussing a large pay raise he got, which I was quite happy for him, but he said it in such a condescending way (very "I'm better than you") that turned me way off. Money can change people and it's surprising who it does and doesn't change. I'd like to think I'm still the same dorky 18 year old, just with better toys.

I think talking about it is healthy, it's good to have a general understanding. I recall reading something lately that encouraged people to be more open about it. It's when folks are bragging that's not ok.

 

Yes I am the same way, with like you said, certain people. I watched one of my good buddies go from making $13 an hour to over $20 by switching jobs and he just went on a spending spree. But he has since calmed down and is back to normal. I like to think I haven't changed much either. I will tell certain people if I get a raise and then leave it at that and try not to sound like I am bragging or anything about it. People who know me know how I am in person

I have 2 friends that know what I make. That's it.
I dont ever want to come off as "flaunting" or bragging, etc.
I've damn near killed myself, and almost lost everything to get where I am.
And I'd rather not ever let that in jeopardy.
My mother doesnt even know what I make.

 

I tell my current students that now when we're out at practice...They try to be sly asking how much I make without being awkward and I either tell them or just tell them to google it. Glory of working for a public university system...it's all public record with a couple keyboard taps.

It is good and bad. I think public knowledge can be a negative thing especially if your name is attached to it, but it all depends.

I've maintained my anonymity so long, I'd be at a loss if my professional and personal lives instersected.

 

I’ve managed to keep my work and personal lives separate since I started 11 years ago. It’s tough because you put up a wall to each respective group. However, because of work, it’s hard to make new connections personally because I don’t/can’t trust people.

 

I'm sure. Only 2 of my coworkers really know much about my personal life, but one I have been friends with for over 4 years now and the other started like 2 months ago but we have similar interests

 

I go fishing with my co-workers. And do dinner with my old project managers
