It would be moving to Rumford for the time being/season/year. I have a job offer at Sunday River as a Lift Mechanic.

In case anyone is bored here are the pictures that I've been sent. For $700 w/utilities is it worth it, IYO? Anything wrong with the structure from what you see?

So is this like a short time goal? Or do you have career plans out there?
I’m typically against leaving a career style job for a seasonal job but if you have other prospects out there for a career then chase it up... just remember a seasonal job is cool and you get some sweet lifestyle perks along with it but you’re also losing out on alot of the long term lifestyle gains/growth being in a career will offer.

it's a full time year round position. I wouldn't be doing this for a seasonal position. It won't make the same as an engineer but I will be able to live comfortably especially in Maine

Potential water damage in the overhead beam in picture 1, and under the window in picture 11. Definite past water damage to the ceiling in the last picture.
We've had a lot of rain the last few days, so if there's any current leaks they'll be damp now.

Does the $700 include heat? Because that's an older house, and doesn't look like it's had any recent renovations, so it is probably fairly poorly insulated.

About par for the area, actually. It's a smaller house in an area without a lot of demand.

My buddy says that it's a good neighborhood. He apparently grew up a few streets down on Crescent and says that the area is still pretty nice. If heat's included it seems like a decent deal, as long as there's no mold issues, etc.

Edit- Check the center chimney while you're there. Looks like it's cracked/missing some pieces in that streetside picture. If they're still missing, ask the guy directly if it leaks around that roof penetration.

That water damage could harbor some nasty secrets behind the drywall and wood paneling. Mold you can’t see is just as bad as the mold you can. Does look like it has fresh asphalt on the roof though.

Depends on what you consider around Boston haha. Somerville hasn't seen anything. I think only some places north, or the wild west have seen anything and it wasn't substantial by any means.

Yeah mostly thinking about Boston/Cambridge/Somerville area. It's still mostly 60s and 50s here, with a few dips into the 40s. Been pretty rainy though, which I don't mind. People are already wearing their heavy winter jackets, and I'm walking around in jeans and a hoodie.

God I love the south. It was strange watching the election results in TN after living in MA for 7 years though. 180 degree flip haha

I have a friend who lives in Portland so I end up there a few times a year. I went on my last trip and it’s an experience. The size/portion of the pizza is incredible. Decent beer collection if I recall too.

If there aren't current links or tons of black mold, seems good to me, especially with it including heat. Another thing I found out when I moved, you don't know where you want to live, until you live there.

So think of this rental as a one year stop to find out where exactly in town you want to live. Maybe you want to be a little out of town, or there is a certain diner you want to be near... Maybe this house is perfect, and if the landlord lets you add some paint or something to "make it your own" it will be good for a while.

I think Maine is one of the safest (crime wise) places you could move, and @Noelie84 seems to have a good grip on the neighborhood, sounds nice. But, maybe it doesn't work, maybe your mom and dad are right and you should have stayed in town...You are young and I bet you learn a lot in this coming year no matter what. About yourself and your relationships with people in your life. Unless there was a unknown catastrophe, I don't think you would regret giving it a good try.

Snowed in Maine a couple of times, so far.

    23rd&24th:

And then we got dusted here at the house & in the mountains on the 26th while I was trying to put my plow together.

Man, IMHO Rumford is a weird place. Strictly speaking from an outsiders point of view. It's the kind of place when I drive through I think, "why do people live here?" That being said, some of the best coldwater fishing in the Northeast is very close by and the outdoor recreation opportunities beyond that are really great too. And I have no idea, it could be an amazing town with a good school system.. who knows.

The house looks pretty run down but for that price I could definitely make it work. Even in that condition around here you'd pay $1500 a month or more. It's got a garage!

I would take a big hit to pay & benefits but could be gaining enjoyment in my job. This isn't a move to make a killing but to enjoy my job, life and home; it's a major career change essentially.
