On my back road drive to work I'm pretty consistent at 21 this winter, I was at 23 most of the summer.

Highway is highly dependent on speed--at 55, I can get 26-27 easily in the summer, 65 is 23-24, 75 is more like 20-21.

Low teens would kill me driving 50+ miles per day.

At 24 miles round trip for work it's not bad for me, but if I had a longer commute I'd definitely be looking at fuel sippers for a DD and keep the Ram in the garage most of the time.

Happy new year Jeff. Sorry about the truck; it can be replaced. Glad everyone is okay. Just came across this thread and figured it might be beneficial info as you negotiate with the insurance company, and look for a new truck.

My 2017 SR 4 banger MT operates at the same mpg figures you stated above. Interesting.

Especially when you figure that it weighs less, has less frontal area, and produces 1/2 the HP and torque numbers of the F150. :notsure:

Personally, I'd love to see somebody shoehorn a 2.7 & 10 speed into a Tacoma, just to see what it could do

Plus, it'll tow 8100 lbs, run a 0-60 in under 6 seconds, and it cost about the same as a midsize configured the way I'd want one. I also get this kind of mileage with 3.73 gears--a rare option for these trucks.

It doesn't make sense to me that the midsize MPGs are as low as they are. Even the Ranger, which is now apparently the best, is lower than I feel like they should be.

Probably has to do with the fact that they're not that much lighter than a full-size any more. Sure, there's a little less steel/aluminum involved, but they need to be reinforced so much to meet the crash standards that you don't save that much. Plus they've got all of the same luxury & tech bits that the full size trucks do, which also add weight (and are also why the midsizes aren't really any cheaper than a full-size, since they've all got the same tech and that's the expensive part). :notsure:

Plus they typically have smaller engines, so the power/weight ratios are pretty similar to the bigger trucks, so there's not really any advantages there, either.

If I remember right, my truck is 5015 lbs (GVWR minus Payload Sticker). But, I think a less loaded SuperCab with the same engine can be around the 4800 lb mark. A loaded DCLB Tacoma (which is similar in wheelbase to mine) is what, 4500 or so? You're right, that's not a huge difference.

Sounds about right. I think my '16 was right around 4800 or 4900 curb weight. Plus the Tacoma's have more ground clearance and that tends to hurt MPG's a bit as well.

I'll need to figure it out with my new commute at the new shop. When I lived 7 minutes away from my old shop I wasn't getting good mileage around town. I also sit in my truck to eat lunch. The truck still says I'm averaging 16.5 mpg though. My commute now is about 20 minutes one way. Nice having basically 1ton running gears and half ton suspension though

You might sort of get to see it if Ford gets a little crazy with the Ranger. If they make a Ranger Raptor, that 2.7L Ecoboost is a prime candidate for the powerplant.
How much does your 2500 weigh? My 250 is sitting around 6,400 lbs as best I can tell (she's heavier now with all the stuff I added, 6,400 lbs I think is what it weighed when it left the factory).

About the same, upper 6400/lower 6500 range. But that's before the plow frame/electronics are figured into it. And with the 700lbs of ballast and 950 for the plow I'm pretty solidly at 8k+ a fair amount of the time right now.

Wow, I'm surprised they're that close together. I have the new aluminum body which supposedly saved quite a bit of weight. The previous generation F250 must have been a heavy sum-bish.

I wouldn't be surprised if they consider 200lbs a huge savings. And you could argue that it certainly is.

For the F-150, it was a 7-800 lb weight savings from steel to aluminum for the crew cab. I think it was a little less with the Super Duty, but thought it would still be 5-600 lbs.

I don't know if it really did, though. They added a lot of frame reinforcement to make up for the lighter body so I think the net weight savings were only around a couple hundred pounds, tops. Plus I've got the smaller Hemi, the 5.7. It weighs in around 500lbs, and the 6.4 is closer to 700, I think. So I imagine Ford's 6.2 is about the same as the Ram 6.4, so there's a difference there too.

I read a couple of articles that said that it was in the range of 300lbs, I think.
