Anyone done a hoseclamp on the tailgate? Probably hit up West Marine for a stainless steel marine grade so it won't rust, just don't know the size to aim for.

Some reason I just can't get my head around a small displacement turbo powerplant for all the towing I do. I know it's damn fast and plenty powerful but even though my Sierra is a potential rust bucket, the V8 is just awesome. Lots of complaints about it but I can't for the life of me understand it. I'd probably go with the 5.0 if it were a Ford. Right now, if I had to buy tomorrow I would likely be at the RAM dealer. I really like their 2500 with the 6.4L.

    Sweet deal.

The 3.5 has the maximum towing in the F150 lineup, not sure on the HD range, I think the HD range is all NA. Actually, they introduced a LD Diesel this year or last, so that might have higher tow ratings, not sure. I love it, but it was too much truck for me. Not worth it ultimately.

So far, I haven't had any rust issues with the Fords. I've had a 2013 F150 that I got rid of at 120k miles, a 2018 F250 that was deemed undrivable at around 30k miles and now a 2019 F250 just crossing 20k miles. None of them showed rust like my dad's Chevy's. Whatever Ford uses to coat their frames seems to hold up fairly well.

I like the new Ram, but I'd avoid the 6.4 primarily because of the MDS system (cylinder shut off). The primary reason I went with, and continue to go with the Ford, is the cabin. I really like their interior setup.
The ratings in the half ton category are a numbers game. Most of the trucks will run out of payload long before they'll come close to reaching their max towing rating (tongue weight of the trailer and occupants). The 3.5 is a decent little power plant but, if it were me, I'd get the 5.0 again. That's what I had in my 2013, it's a strong engine, love to rev and is right on par power-wise and MPG-wise with the 3.5 ecoboost. If you're going for a LD diesel, the Chevy's actually seems to be the best all around, it's beating out Ford and Dodge. For Ford's HD line up, you now have the 7.3 NA gas, 6.2 NA gas or the 6.7 turbo diesel.

    Except the GM transmission :(

If I went full size I was between the 5.0 since it's NA, or the 2.7 since I don't need the power of the 3.5. But I agree, everyone fights for 50 lbs here and there, when in reality everything above "X" lbs plays the same. With the mid size it's 6k, anything above 6k in my opinion, they're all going to be about the same, so fighting for a few lbs here and there....not worth it.

Come to think, I haven't actually seen one in a while around Providence. And I see a lot of cars from that timeframe. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy I don't. They probably ended up donating some of the last ones on the lot because nobody wanted them.

Actually, the way cars look now, I bet that if GM introduced it today it'd sell pretty well.

It's not even that, you have to look at payload, not towing. Typically, the tongue weight of a bumper pull trailer will be about 10% of the overall weight of the trailer. So a 10k lb trailer will have a roughly 1k lb tongue weight. If you look at a typical crew cab, half ton truck, the rated payload is only 1,200-1,500 lbs. Even though the trucks are supposedly rated to tow upwards of 10k lbs, they'll be overloaded long before they hit that. It's the same game in the mid-size market but the overall tow ratings are lower so you at least have some payload left for ancillary things like... the driver.

My guess is at least 80% of the half tons you see pulling campers are actually overloaded and they have no idea. "But it's tow rating is 8k lbs!" Yes jerkwater, but a camper is usually more like 20% tongue weight so that 6k lb camper is likely putting 1200 lbs to the axle, and you have a family of 4 corn fed lardos in the cabin... Tow ratings are numbers only useful for car salesmen.
