I usually go three years on a phone, then the battery starts getting weak and I replace the whole thing. Never liked the S10e I have now, though. They went for flash over function and it's a step down from my S7 Active in some ways.

If I won the lotto, there's very little I'd actually move again, most of my stuff is in the 'good enough' category but I wouldn't mind some 'great' furniture, cookware, etc.

winning the lotto then going HAM is the quickest way to welfare.

Do just enough to be content, while still working and you will be happy happy and can retire whenever you like. Your strategy is sound.

Every time I think that our warehouses have hit rock bottom for stock/delivery issues, they break though and find a whole new level underneath it.

    My condolences.

In today's BS I went in to the dealer to get all the fluids (oil, front and rear diff, t-case and transmission) done on the truck since I'm at 40K and I didn't want to stretch the interval to 60K. Yeah, yeah, I'm lazy and just don't have time to fight with it. They quoted me an embarrassingly high number for everything but the transmission. I said screw it, just do it, at least if something goes south I've got a paper trail on the truck. I know list for the Toyota transfer case fluid is $87 (yes you can get it cheaper but). They quote me $340 for the transmission flush. I told the service writer I've got a manual transmission and it doesn't flush, it's a drain and fill. He says but the truck has to be up to operating temperature as it doesn't have a dipstick. I explain that's the automatic, not the manual. So he says fine and says he'll include it for said embarrassingly high number. I get the call like two hours after I leave saying it was the $340 option. I say forget it and since I was already at the local tire shop I use/trust asked them for a quote with Redline. They said it'd be $70 plus fluid. I'm severely kicking myself I didn't just let them do the whole service. Probably a $400 mistake but such is life. I won't need anything again for another 2 years.

@jethro @mach1man001 Driving test was kinda inconclusive for the bearing. Worked sometimes that it pointed to the PS bearing other times I didn't notice. So I feel like I need to jack it up, try to shimmy the wheel (from the top and bottom right?) or spin it with a hand on the coilover and feel for the vibration...that's how I discovered the DS bearing was bad.

It's unreal what they charge...but it's supply and demand. SOOO many people line up to have them do it....DIY is the VAST minority. You're seen as a knuckle dragging ape if you do your own vehicle stuff around here....Nobody in my family did their own stuff until I started talking to them about it. And then my brother's kid is in a Vocational school and loves auto so he does a lot of there stuff now (a senior)...I just hate the rust.

People look at me like I'm nuts when I say I don't take advantage of the two free oil changes the dealer offers. I live 25 miles from the dealer. I'd rather pay $30 (more like $15 for the next several changes with the Rotella deal I got) and do it in my garage at my convenience than spend 2-3 hours of my time driving back and forth and waiting for them to do it.

I've also done every oil change on every vehicle myself since I started driving so some if it's wanting to keep that up.

Yep, they told me mine was "scratchy" when they took mine off, so you might want to actually take the tire off and spin the hub and see if it makes noise. It should obviously be silent for the most part. Mine kinda howled but only when turning left. It wasn't really loud, I bet I could have gone a while with it but I can't take any noise with my truck. On the GMC I had him get the best one he could and it was like $350 for labor and materials.

Here's a good one in the "What would you do?" category... Truck has a nasty rattle somewhere with the exhaust system. I figure it's a heat shield as they usually fail first and then rattle on the exhaust. Rattle is worst when it's cold and as the truck warms up it gets somewhat better but still there. I crawled under the truck and it's definitely not a heat shield or loose hanger, but it's in the muffler itself. Must be a baffle let loose inside there. But the muffler is solid and amazingly not even rusty.

So would the rattle just drive you bonkers? Seems foolish to replace a solid muffler just for a little rattle. But I can't stand it! What to do...

My original plan was to do it this past summer on my vacation week, but the kids got sick and I lost the week to myself. I'll likely do it all myself at 60K again. I just loathe fluid changes. I'll do everything else, but fluid changes are one of those things I despise for whatever reason. Suspension, exhaust, electrical, body, absolutely...fluids not so much. Even on my snowblower / lawnmowers / etc, I'll do fluid changes, but I just don't love doing them.

I think what goes through me is when it becomes quickly clear I know 10x more than the service advisor. Like, he kept quoting the automatic transmission fluid procedure and flushing it. Never again.

I should have just used the indie shop from Day 1. Lesson learned.
