Figured as much, think my 2011 still uses the same plug though

 

My rear drums are atrocious. Maybe this summer I’ll do them...they’re basically a parking brake.

 

If they haven't been touched, start douching them now with PB Blaster. They're going to be just a big ball of rusted suck by now!

 

I’ll just back the whole rear end into a kiddie pool full of PB blaster I had to get a flat tire plugged I couldn’t get the wheel off the hub without massive kicking

 

Heckin' right. That's why I like Ford's drivetrains right now. They haven't had any major issues, and they haven't decided to change a lot. That 3.5 EB has been around since dinosaurs (2007, in its first form). Toyota's 2.7 I4 has been around forever too. Something like 2004. I am happy I have a crew cab now that I'm looking at making it sleep-able but I do want that 4 banger. Maybe when I get two vehicles I can have one road tripper and then a 4 cylinder tacoma

I have a 2020 since Dec 2019 but I haven't taken the drums off at all. I will probably take them off this summer to at least keep everything accessible and moving. I am at almost 25k and on stock brakes, so will probably be doing pads this summer anyway (hopefully not the rotors too)

 

The 2.7 has been around since 95 I believe as the 3rz in first gens. Second and third gens have the 2TR. I'm pretty sure the 2TR is more or less a 3RZ with a different head and a few other thing. Then in 2014 or 2015 the 2TR got dual VVTI

 

Sounds like a quick clean, lube and adjust wouldn't hurt, would also help pedal feel

 

Spray that sucker down with grease. I absolutely HATE doing drum brakes.

 

Theyre not too bad on the Tacoma. Granted I've done mine about 5 or 6 time now

 

The parking brake setup on the FJ made me question my life choices.

 

Yeah I think in the 3rd gens it's the same as the 2nd but they did the VVTI so they made a big deal out of that. Which, in my mind, makes it better. So. I really want that 4 banger I just don't want the extended cab

brakes feel fine, but I will definitely be popping them off so that when I DO have to do them it's not 100k miles of salt mud and dust.

I haven't done them before. That was actually a factor with thinking about the Tacoma was that it has drums. But, they work, and since they need it every let's say 100k miles instead of 30k, for ~500 bucks is how much it would cost to do pads (and rotors) 3 times anyway (30 60 90) just bring it to a shop and tell them good luck

But, I'll just keep cleaning them and likely when I do eventually need them I'll DIY, watched a few youtoobs so I am a pro now.

how many miles on that thing?! I thought they were in the range of +/- 100k for longevity!

 

My 2006 has VVTi just single though so its got slightly less power til I put my LCE header on. The drums and shoes ive replaced 3 or 4 times. At least once was due to seeping axle seals which will eat through braking material. Another time was for ebrake cables, and the most recent was my regear/rear wheel bearings. Truck has 168k miles and sees a ton of time in the woods and on the rocks. The 35s and armor also dont help at all

Most groups - facebook, here, etc. seem to be relatively good about trail runs and rides. It's not usually the organized strangers you meet on the internets that are the issue. It's other groups and random people that just decide to go out there etc. The two recent incidents was a jeep rolled over past midnight, and then a few days later a few muppets got charged with firearms violations/trespassing late night too, closer to 10 (it wasn't reported right away like the death though, so it took a while for this one to become wide spread known).

True, but like I said people can't be responsible this happens.
I feel bad for all the people that used it like they were supposed to but I get why and completely understand.
This is why more and more trails keep closing...
I believe that all trails should be shut and keys given out to the righteous!
Then the responsible people could at least still go have fun.
The off-road world keeps growing and it's running out of room... somebody should figure something out here don't ya think?
