Unfortunately, I could have made a lot of money on bitcoin, but my story is a tale of woe. Of course, everyone has that "woulda coulda shoulda" story but I am still mourning over mine. @emelianenkov wanted me to tell the story on Facebook in a thread about dogecoin. I wasn't ready to share it then because I was still scarred deeply over it, but I think I am ready to share. back in 2008, a couple of my...... well let's just call them "very good computer friends (hackers)" started talking about bitcoin so I decided to build a rig with four of the highest price video cards that I could get my hand on to start mining. Over the course of three years, I was able to amount a total of 7.2 bitcoin's. The rig had cost me close to $3000 to build and it took up a lot of power consumption. When I mean a lot, I had a Kill-a-watt attached to it and I was spending almost $75 a month and electric bills just to run the rig. In January 2011, I couldn't continue to justify the price that I was paying in my electric bill and thought that I just wasted $6000 over the past three years ( $3000 for the rig and another $3000 for my electric bill) to amass, at that time, about $7 Worth of bitcoin. I wound up selling selling all 7.2 bitcoin's for a total of $55 and got rid of the rig. Even when bitcoin went up to $30 in April 2011, I still looked at it as something that was too volatile and two new to lose sleep over it. Needless to say, I am kicking myself in the ass now and have learned to live with heartache.

Wow. I actually almost started mining a few weeks ago but it was too much with the energy and taking over my computer.

That's really a shame, but the problem is you can never know. Bitcoin was around for years doing nothing until it went crazy. But this is why I'm willing to spend 4k today to maybe have my family set forever. If not, I bust my butt for a month or two and make it all back.

But I missed BTC too, and I'm now willing to take a "small" risk.

Used the Solo stove firepit we picked up a few weeks ago for the first time last night. Set it out on the dock and did smores with the giblets. I was impressed at how little smoke there actually was. Basically none until it died down and started to smolder a little. Granted I was using some pretty dry deadfall that I cut up, but still. Plus the amount of ash left over was negligible which is pretty neat. After 1 use, 10/10 recommend. We also got the stand for it and I put it on some 2x6" scrap pieces I had from the deck. With the stand there's almost no heat coming out of the bottom of the thing that you can feel besides probably the actual bottom of the unit(which I did not touch..). So the 2x6's laid down weren't needed which is nice.

I’ve been interested in getting in on the crypto but really have no idea where to start. Did ya’ll just look around online for how to get started? Any good websites or articles that break it down simply?

I have a friend who does it and has sorta guided me. coinbase just did an IPO and is a popular exchange that is US based. binance.us is also one but parent company is out of HK and with China taking back HK, I dunno if I'd leave them my money.

@GarlicFarts might have better info too.

I use BlockFi you buy the coins but they hold them there you don’t have a wallet like other places. However you get like 8% interest on them. They have BTC LTC paxg ETH and recently block chain? Chain saw something?

I dunno - I’m far from a pro I just wanted a few bucks in it now I’m just flipping it with gains my principal is pulled out completely. I usually have exit strategies for my stocks I buy to flip (for example Exxon I have a continginent trailing stop of 0.50 cents to trigger at 70.50 so minimum I get 70, max I get whatever it goes up to minus 0.50). With my crypto I have no exit plan or strategy. Exxon the exit strategy is to pay for a vacation  at this point I have around 200 in crypto that’s all gains. I rode 150 in principal in BTC from 28k ish. Close to 55 I pulled my 150 and then started playing with litecoin and ETH as well. Now that 200 is just all gains for fun and if it goes to zero because the whole system collapses overnight, oh well.

@emelianenkov recently built a mining machine.

I forgot who was talking about them having like 8 recently. I did too. Bought a pizza with them. It was enough that now I’d be WELL over a mil.

fuck me. After I clean up my truck I’m posting it on Facebook for 40k. If someone takes it for that then I won’t hesitate. 18 months and two road trips on it, I’d definitely go get a crew cab SR from the dealer the day after and start fresh with zero miles. I’m at 32k ish right now. I’d even get to keep the sliders and skid plate

@GarlicFarts I'm in it for the interest too. The banks are a fucking joke these days and the dollar means squat. You are losing money with every dollar you put in the bank, and losing it fast! If your money isn't earning interest at a minimum it needs to be moved imo. The fact that these alternative places are offering great rates, is VERY appealing. I can get my money just as easily as I could from the bank too. Hell, mine even has a visa debit card so I don't even need to move anything, I can literally spend it anywhere. I use Kinesis, which is gold and silver backed and only trades a few cryptos. I can also cash out the metals and go pick them up whenever I want. If you hold certain assets with them you earn money on every transaction the company does. Thats where the tokens come into play, they limited them so the ratio never change and the more use the more I will get from them, even holding silver and gold with them earns you yields. (the metal is allocated, no mystical paper metal that doesn't really exist and is regularly audited)

They just inked a deal with Malaysia and are created a sharia approved banking system for the muslim world. I'm just not 100% if those transactions count towards my potential yields, but if it does...and then if other countries use it...well theres a lot of muslims out there!
How the fuck do I get my 4runner over to this mysterious auction you hang out at!

I did forget to mention, so I use BlockFi - what I forgot to mention is that it is NOT insured FDIC. Yes you could put your emergency fund into GUSD which is just US dollars and earn 8% on it. But it’s very immature and not fdic insured.

that said - an 8% yield in USD stability is good full stop. That’s what I’m aiming for as bare minimum for my retirement plannings.

I view this also as like a savings account, not my end all be all investment accounts. I don't think I'd ever store my entire retirement online.

It could have been me. My boss has like 8 of them lost on an old phone and he can't remember the account or what app/wallet it was. He associates it with scammers and doesn't consider it real money so for the past 2 years I'm telling him to find that account info because it's like 80k worth now. He won't do anything about it!! We bought them years and years ago to pay a scammer for a ransomware virus our company got back in 2011 or something. He was confused about the exchange rate and bought 8 extra coins to be safe then after we paid the ransom for our files he just forgot about the bitcoins.
