I filled at $4.099/gal this summer. Figured it was a gamble because even that was high, but I guess I timed it right. The place I get it from is at $5.499 now.

So far, the boiler has only run for about 10 minutes while my oil guy was here cleaning it and testing efficiency. I've been getting by mostly with the mini split and with the pellet stove sometimes. Pretty soon it'll be too cold for the mini split to keep up and I'll shift entirely to pellets. I can heat the house entirely with that except when it's sub-zero, then I need the boiler to help since the rooms far from the stove will get a little too cold.

I'm experimenting with different pellet brands this year - I bought at least 4 bags of 6 different brands and plan to measure heat output and ash from each. I usually run Vermonts, but could only get two ton of those this year - my third ton is a Lauzon hardwood that I'm happy with so far. They are a little dirtier than the Vermonts, but man do they burn hot. There's so much heat that the convection fan actually runs longer than the exhaust fan when I shut the stove down. I'm excited to try the others.

I imagine the squeeze is gonna be tough this winter. Luckily my gf and I didn’t use a lot of propane last winter but with crypto mining being dead, I don’t think my space heaters will be on lol.

For those that don’t mind hoodies and sweats in the house, an electric blanket might a wallet saver

That an electric heater. (Quartz infrared)

It heats the lower floor. But when it gets in the teens we fire up our furnace. I get a break from spring til winter sets in usually with our heating bill.

Hello everyone. Been awhile since my last visit and I came in time to see talk about stoves and oil and the like . We just got this new Vermont Castings wood stove.

That came with this heat shield

Anybody need it? I don’t.I’m in Nashua.

I love this stove but it is taking me a little while to get used to the burning versus my old Ben Franklin. It takes me three burn downs to build a good coal bed before I can add larger pieces before I can close the damper. But it burns very efficiently once I get it burning properly.

Oh , and I believe we spent $4.59 per gallon of heating oil prior to the install. Haven’t turned on the burner yet. But will probably run it for awhile today just to have a listen of it running

If I were I’d need to poke a hole in an outside wall. And seeing how good a job closing up one I seriously doubt my ole lady will be handing me a sawzall anytime soon.

I have a Quadrafire with a burn pot, so if they generate a lot of ash, it'll fill the burn pot quick. The Vermonts are awesome, I can go about two weeks before I need to clean it. They're 100% pine. I've run Maine Woods in the past which is a blend and they are a solid middle of the road pellet - the ash production isn't bad. They're just as expensive as the Vermonts, though, so I don't bother with them anymore. I ran a ton of Tractor Supply pellets one year and never again - I had to clean the stove every two days. The amount of ash they produced was unreal.

This year I got a few bags of La Crete (which I hear went downhill), Matra, Wood & Sons, and Northern Warmth Supreme. I'm intrigued by the Northern Warmth. They're stupid money because they come from the Pacific Northwest, but the dealer I got them from said he has a customer who is willing to pay the price and says the guy burns an entire ton before he has enough ash to bother cleaning his stove.

I think he said they were $515 a ton. The Vermonts I buy are $350/ton, so it's a big difference.

He said on the other side of the country, they're closer to that $350 number. Is the truck and train transport that adds so much to the price.

I was looking into pellet stoves earlier this summer and opted out since I'm never home (I travel for work) so I am going with mini-splits too to solve my lacking A/C issue when I'm home. If I were home more a pellet stove would be amazing.. maybe in like 5 years when I decide to stop traveling.

Mine turns on and off with the thermostat, which is annoying and I don't really use it. I just set it to 90 and use low/medium/high to regulate the temperature. I think the Harman stoves will adjust the burn rate way down - just barely enough to keep running - when they hit the set temperature, then they'll throttle up when they fall below the setpoint.
