Who is it someone on here has a signature "I have a problem for your solution"

Is cylinder shutdown still a disaster or have they sorted out the fact that non-operational cylinders are getting blown up because of no oil going into them?

I love the marketing about the Dodge "mild hybrid", because we can't call it a hybrid, because that will scare away the manly men

I am not a fan of auto start/stop, not even a little. Idling consumption is next to none, MAYBE in a tunnel situation I get it. But in normal traffic, I do not like start/stop. Even if I understand the benefits and the up-sides. You can appreciate the benefits and still not like something (like me and museums).

Good thing about the Hyundai/Kia. I took a zip tie flat end. And stuffed it in the side of the button and it stayed. Even after shutdown. So it acted like a normal car. When I sold it the zip tie end was removed and it did it’s thing again. I’m happy my 2019. Doesn’t have that crap. Oh look I’m saving the planet by not idling. But the wear and tear on the starter is ok. Yeah that makes sense. Lol

The Kia Soul rental we had in Texas had the feature. Took me about a day to realize what it was. I left it on once I knew what it was as it's not my car. On the days when it was hot enough to use the AC, it was clearly of limited value as the engine would start to run the compressor.

While on the topic of Kia, this was a 2021 and it felt like it might have electric power steering instead of hydraulic. The steering wasn't bad, just felt a bit weird at first. Does anyone know if it's electric or hydraulic?

The Soul is a very good rental car, but I don' think I'd own one.

All electric even my stinger had it. I was leery at first. But that car was spot on when it came to handling and cornering. One thing I will say the 4 cylinder was a more balanced car overall. And took the corners better than the v6. Option.

Maybe I'll rethink things, I dunno. I know the rangers have it, people short out the leads so that the auto start-stop is default off, and if you hit the button, it turns it on. I'd have to live with one a while to know if I don't care about the instant go when you take your foot off the brake by default. I know you can turn it off for woods/snow/etc as needed.

How did you like the stinger? My neighbor has one and I am VERY intrigued. I appreciate the mass produced "power" cars like the stinger, BRZ, miata, etc - something that has some oomph, not a V8 muscle, still zippy and fun to drive, isn't a 100k corvette, and isn't some super rare hard to find replacement parts for car.

My wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee has the auto start/stop and its habit to turn it off the second you get in the car. While I understand the i benefit, not a fan of the lag between hitting the gas pedal and having the secondary starter kick in. As mentioned, in the summer the auto-off shuts down the AC, and in the winter it resets the heated seats and steering wheel. First world problems for sure, but we didn't spend all that money to have any inconveniences.

I have tested the gas savings and usefulness of the system and there is negligible gains in total range.

It was awesome I had it tuned with a cat back and cai. I had it 4 four years. Even the base models had launch control.
Your at a stop. Disengage all the safety crap (off switches).select sport mode Press the brake and accelerator fully side slip the brake pedal and you’ll spin the tires every time :D

Yeah, the numbers on google say it consumes about 1/2 gal for an hour of idling in general. But we typically "idle" at stoplights for about 2-3 minutes at a time, or in stop and go traffic where you idle, then go, then idle, then go, etc.

I get the idea, but I don't think it actually gives a noticeable real world benefit. It's like saving 0.1mpg, maybe? when applied in real world.

 exactly! I have the radar cruise I just remembered though.

My buddy has a Christmas tree on his CB antenna.

 nice. I know the insurance on those was bananas because it was a cheap powerful car, people were binning them left and right. I don't necessarily want launch control, that's like ONE step above my "zippy fun" desire, but if it just happens to be there.... :notsure:

I'm leaning toward Miata. I had a Mazda 3 hatchback with the 2.5L in it, that thing was fun. Part of why I have the tacoma. I was tailing (not up the ass, just following) someone in the passing lane on 114 in RI going along the bay toward Barrington. We were passing the cars in the right lane at a normal pace, then absolutely blew the doors off this little honda or something. I thought "damn, old boy is going way too slow for this road!" looked down - nope, I'm just bumbling along at 85 in a 45. That's not a wee woo pay the fine, that's riding a bike to work out of necessity for a bit. :( I had wanted a truck anyway, so the natural pace of a truck helped.

 and comedically, I never got a speeding ticket in the mazda, but got one in the truck!

I do have the TSS sensor there too. It does get blocked every so often. I may end up moving that onto the bumper itself, but we shall see.

Good to know! I might try a wreath and see if I can surround it

I don't know how much I'll need it but the warnings would get annoying I presume.

Eh, it just does the "the sensor is blocked, clean it" then leaves the icon on the dash. Other than that, it doesn't bother me.

I've had airbag/seatbelt warning lights for the past 2 years, I think I can handle that.

Just zip tied to the grille? I assume that's my plan. I just need to find one. Target they were like 40$ last night. Didn't seem worth it.

Yep, zips top thru grill and bottom thru plate frame. Bottom is a must to stop it from flopping up onto hood on the highway

The Chevy cylinder deactivation still has issues, I'm sure Dodge does also, although I'm sure many will say they're fine. Seems to be luck of the draw to some degree, it's fine until it isn't.
Dodge's 'mild hybrid', or at least the one I was referring to, put a smaller motor on the crank itself to help introduce power that way, not like a typical hybrid. They also used that motor for the start/stop.
Ford, the ones that have a button on the dash for start stop, you can jump out the button and permanently disable the 'feature'. But, the 3/4 ton and up Ferds don't have any fuel saving 'features' at all so that's not something I've ever had to deal with to date.
