Yeah, I know the dodge "mild hybrid" is basically another small ish battery, probably about the same size as a normal car battery, they use that to "get off the line" (and I think it runs A/C with the engine off in start/stop mode), then the engine kicks on.

If they've figured out a way to make cylinder deactivation work well I'd go for it. Driving a pseudo I4 at highway speed would be sweet. If it wasn't for needing a double cab (now that I sorted out my camping setup...) I'd be in the 4 banger tacoma for sure.

We've had a Honda Accord and now an Odyssey with deactivation. No issues with either one. Both got incredible gas milage for 278hp V6. Accord would get 39 mpg on a trip and have seen high 30s from a 4400 lb minivan

True, though it could be stated that Toyota isn't using any of that stuff that you mentioned (and having more risk, as we've seen). I've never been in a 3G much less driven one though.

Over the long haul I'm sure that replacing that second starter will negate the fuel savings in most/all cases. My rental Chevy Malibu had it and I shut it off every time. I could be wrong but I think if I was running the AC it wouldn't kick in the start/stop. If only they'd put it on a rocker switch so you wouldn't have to shut it off every time.

The Dodge probably rots out first anyway haa

Devil's advocate to counter this, you don't see starters going left and right.

    https://mechanicbase.com/electric/does-auto-start-stop-wear-out-engine-components/

There is no proof that automatic start/stop wears out the starter motor or other engine parts faster than usual. The system only runs when the engine is hot and when the engine is very easy to start. Some engines also start almost exclusively with compression.

The biggest form of wear on your car engine is starting it. However, it’s the cold-starting of the engine that produces the most wear-and-tear. When you start an engine after hours or days of nonuse, it’s reminiscent of putting a cold mug into a pot of boiling water, except the damage doesn’t happen as spontaneously.

    That's actually a good point I didn't think about - it's not a cold start.

I went with Dakars because I needed new leafs, didn't want a huge lift and the truck isn't fully built yet. Next year when it is I'm considering a custom pack. IMO if you're gonna keep the truck long term and have a pretty stable loadout it's worth it to go that route.

If you want something off the shelf, the Dakars really aren't bad as long as you're willng to taper them a little or get shackles that fit the Hilux profile they insist on shipping them with.

I would bet they beef up the starter to deal with start stop. Sometimes engineers can be smart...

Perhaps, and I did have that vehicle in late April of last year so it wasn't like middle of winter. That said, in local driving it would still mean more restarts anyway.

    Engineers never do anything smart.

I dunno. I'm not an automotive engineer, mechanic, and don't own a car with auto start stop (AKA: ASS)

That said, when the taco goes, I really don't know what the next truck would be. I am enticed by that ranger...TBD what the next gen taco is, but to be brutally honest with myself, the taco is really not worth it. Frontier and Ranger would have been smarter buys. Last I knew like 2 years ago, Mitsu was planning on a small truck in 2024, and dodge was bringing back the Dakota in 24/25 (maybe a different name, but they were doing a small truck, not just the full size rams). That was all pre pandemonium though. I do like that ranger though... Just not a fan of the high bed sides.

They are smart enough to go to school and learn how to design cars that they know they will never have to work on. Which is the only explanation for how near impossible some repairs are.

Back in the 1970s, GM put the heater/AC blower on the mid size (Chevelle, Cutlass, Tempest, Buick Skylark) was placed on the firewall, but under the right fender. Which mean that the fender bolts had to be loosened to replace the blower motor. Chrysler had some front fenders with "hidden" bolts that could only be found after the inner fender was removed. I could probably list 100 weird things like that which made sense from an engineering standpoint, but not a repair standpoint.

Oh, also Ford Mustangs in the 1967/70 time frame with big block engines had spark plugs that were almost impossible to change without either removing the engine or doing what most people did. Which was to use a torch to burn holes in the inner fender panels so a socket on an extension could be used to remove the plugs.

Power went out about 15 minutes ago. Whole house generator waited 45 seconds as it's programmed, then started up. National Grid says that 740 customers are effected and will have it restored by about 6:30 tonight.

I'm good as long as Xfinity doesn't lose power to their amplifiers.

    Cough cough......

I was supposed to be done for the seasonlol but a relative reached out wanting his 08 tundra done and stated he also wanted the 07 tundra he just picked up also done. Both are plow trucks. The 08 looked pretty damn good, the 07...... he needed to look a little closer. He still got a good deal on it and I sent him links fir parts. But it needs fuel tank straps and a cross member. The bump stop limit on the rear also had holes lol. But the rest seemed pretty solid. Might do some plowing for him as well. I've always wanted to.

I'm a Chem E who should have been a Mech E who was converted into a pseudo EE. I know nothing.

The ESS in the Jeep is INVASIVE. It will shut the car off while you're trying to turn left in an intersection and then take enough time to restart it's scary. Waiting for a parking spot, off it goes. I swear it shut off one time the second I went from reverse to drive. Disabling it is the first thing I do after I turn on the Jeep. When I had a Highlander as a loaner I really liked how they handled ESS. A light application of the brake wouldn't shut it off, but a harder push on the pedal and it'd kill. I don't know if a light touch for a prolonged period would have also killed it but for the average day to day driving it was really non-invasive. I don't hate the idea of it, but I really disliked Jeep's integration.

That is scary. I kinda think the Malibu wouldn't trip it with light braking now that I think of it
