Well....crisis averted....... The past couple of days I have had a very difficult time trying to start the truck. I assumed that it was the battery being over five years old and having an agm x2 power. Thankfully i have a battery gauge in the truck. The truck, yesterday, started to whine. Today, on my way home, the battery gauge, under idle, was at 10.1 volts. At 2000 rpm it would only go up to 11.4. So yup.....original alternator (186k miles)was done as well. I was able to make it to napa, get a 130 amp denso and a new agm, and just make it home before it died at 430pm. Expecting cold and a small snow storm tomorrow i had to get it done tonight. In my driveway, in 30° weather, in the dark and only a headlamp. Just finished up. I NEVER want to change out an alternator ever again, let only in these conditions. The longest part was taking off my skid plate just to get the serpentine belt off. Then having it stick to the block even after the bolts are out. Then playing a game that is tetris mixed with operation to get the fucking thing out. But after 3 1/2 hours.....its finally done and new battery put in. No more whine and reading 14.5 volts at idle.

I mean it was due. To get 5 1/2 years out of a 4 year warranty battery and abuse it like i have.....its understandable, and 186k on the alternator, it was very tired and lived a long life.....my deal is.....why the hell is it that when something goes wrong, it always happens in late November, December, or January knowing that i don't have a garage?

If you have a couple tarps, you can set up your canopy and hang the tarps around the perimeter with zip ties and have some sort of shelter/garage when needed. As far as heat, I don't have an idea for that.

Oh damn! We have to take skids off to do the serp belts? Woof.

I feel a serp belt mod day in the future. I'm at 80k mines probably due for PM and I can put the old one in the truck as a spare for if/when it goes!

Glad you picked the warmest day in January for it to give up the ghost  but actually - glad you were able to get it home without (much) incident. 185k miles if getting splashed in mud and abused too - that's a respectable retirement!

Don't think so on ours. I'm doing mine in the spring, or if I need an oil change before that, then...

The one I'm dreading, is the stupid duty. Need to do both belts, and tensioners, and going do idlers as well this time around.

Either last year or the year before he had a hole in a coolant hose that sidelined the car, this is a rusty line. Seems to be a known issue, there were recalls for years before and different models after his year. They have some sort of 4 way connection that rusts out. 200 plus for a 5 mile tow and 900 plus for the fix. He has already started reaching out to Subaru.

Sucks, but the car has just over 100k, clutch replaced at about 90k, he enjoys driving it and it’s good experience for him to work thru. He has already had someone push his issue up the ladder at Subaru, and was told that other have gotten help.
