Yup. The trailer hitch design acts like a lever and bends the frame when impacted.

If two certified shops agree with replacing the frame, that is exactly what I would do. Let the person who hit you pay for it with their insurance.

Whether you keep the truck after the frame replacement or not is up to you. You might be able to pursue a reduced value claim if you can as this repair will show up on CarFax.

The only way I would try a hack repair is if I bought the truck back from the insurance company after collecting my check for it being totaled.

Finally got my truck back with the frame replaced. 5 1/2 weeks in the shop.
Accident was October 23rd. Went in shop February 19th. Supply Chain issues are for real.
Happy to have the truck back.

Not safely/correctly repairable because the collapse/kink is in a close box section of the frame. Cutting/sectioning is a hack repair unless there's an OEM procedure for it. When there is, the OE usually sells a repair section of the frame. In the absence of that, it's replace only.

No no no, the OE certified shops are clueless. Haven't you read any TW collision repair posts before?

The only thing missing here are the guys who yell "PDR" every time someone's truck has collision damage.

Not surprised, but curious how many hours actually doing the frame swapover if you know?

My 2010 frame was swapped 3 years ago and it sat for 3 months, in part because nobody had a regular cab frame.

Great to hear you get your truck back. I assume you have no issues thus far?

And the grand scheme of things this certainly was the safest option.

Frame swaps typically pay in the 45-60 hour range.

My frame was swapped 5 years ago. Took the dealership 3 days from when I dropped it off, to when i picked it up. I saw the receipt for $13k. But nothing came out of my pocket

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
The frame is one piece front to rear. Cutting and splicing in a portion of the frame is not for the faint of heart nor would most shops want to tackle it. The replacement section would likely be sourced from a junk yard.
You're going to be better off with a complete frame installed by a capable shop. Toyota now has lots of experience at replacing frames. Take it to a Toyota shop who has done many of the frame replacements under Toyota's program.

My single cab was 3 yrs ago, I want to say it's 40 hours for each of the 2 techs is the average. My guess is in time it gets less with experience.

Not sure how long mine took but it was there 3 months as at least one hole was huge in the frame.

Original quote said 30 hours on the frame replacement , 3 weeks in the shop total.
They ran 5 1/2 weeks. I continue to check over things. I have found a couple of things
    so far but nothing alarming.

IMO, that part of the frame has very little to do with the rest of the frame as far as strength and integrity. Damage appears to be behind the last cross member. The reason they are saying frame replacement is they don't modify frames and ANY frame damage is a frame replacement. If it were me, I would take the frame replacement $$ and have a shop cut and weld a replacement section. That's me though....:)

Your idea does make sense……to a point.

However, splicing of the frame will affect the crumple zone if the truck should ever receive another impact. This is the reason most shops won’t do this.
