What makes you so sure that you are qualified to determine what is a correct procedure and what isn't?
Just because you lack experience and have little understanding of materials, don't assume that everyone else is just as clueless.

A mechanical seal (thread-cutting metal bolt through plastic hole) is common. Look at the fuel petcock on any moto-cross bike, it's held on by bolts threaded into a plastic tank. Those bikes get ridden hard, crashed often and yet I haven't heard of moto-cross riders dieing in horrendous fires.

Why is that? Maybe because metal bolts through plastic tanks is a sound practice?

Sorry OP for what happened, it sucks and makes you furious! I hate theives worse than anything else, if I have something you want/need just ask for it don't steal it. I had a cooler stole out of my boat years ago, had a security light on the boat and still took it. I took it personally but after awhile realized it is just random not personal most times. Pyt word out I would seriously fuck up the little bastards who took it and haven't had trouble since. Of course I did get motivated earlier this Fall and cleaned out my garage so the Tacoma lives there now. And just for extra security my work van that has $12k in tools in it has all laminated glass as it is parked in my driveway. Lots of cars and houses broken into in my area by kids, most never get caught or the Police know who they are but have no hard evidence. Get a job and earn some money so you don't have to steal!

This is a very valid argument for mechanically sealing the tank - but it should also be considered that expansion pressures netted by much larger volumes of liquid to be exponentially greater than small fluid volumes.

While a mechanical seal on one portion of a large tank still allows stress to be distributed over the surface, the abnormality in the interaction of the material at the seal to the rest of the tank can cause a rip to form under extreme pressure increases.

A blanketing example is cold fuel entering the tank from underground and heating to pavement Temps of 130+ in summer months. In a one gallon tank the pressure can be effectively vented, but a large tank sees massive volume change and must be have very high burst ratings to retain it as it equalizes.

You're absolutely right in a mechanical seal being a viable solution, and I'm simply adding to the discussion that volumes should be considered in this application. I would lean towards tank replacement in this case but wouldn't rule out a mechanical seal if there is a pressure equalization measure in the current models tank.
