So I had some ass hole drill a hole in my gas tank. Fast forward to yesterday and installed it myself. Let it run idle for 5 minutes with no issues. Drove it a few hours ago, put in 6 gallons, drove it for maybe 15 minutes and heard a thunk sound while it sat idling at my buddies place. After that I had a bad gas leak. Drove it home, about 5 miles, and lost maybe 1-2 gallons of gas I’m estimating. Picture is what it looks like a few minutes after I got home. It first started leaking slow but bad in the front, but when I got home it started leaking really bad by the filler tube area. I didn’t crawl under it yet as I’m waiting a few hours for it to evaporate some what and make it safer to look around. When I also removed the gas cap a ton of air was let out and I could hear the tank thunk as if it was settling down from overpressure I’m guessing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a second vehicle but love my truck and havnt had a chance to drive it since August when the ass hole drilled my tank.

Forgot to mention. One of the metal hoses on the fuel pump got bent and somewhat kicked. I cut it off and replaced it with a rubber gas hose. Want leaking from what I could see when I looked through the body

Drill bit and drill, or hammer and punch. Put a gas can under the leak and steal gas. Some will do it and put a stick in the hole to plug it then come back later to steal more hoping the driver doesn't notice the perceived loss in mpg from missing fuel.

I live a sheltered life I never gave stealing gas I thought .

I thought it was installing a skid plate and the installer thought the gas tank would be a good attaching point

You think you got some of the lines criss-crossed and now it's not venting? Or maybe the vent solenoid is stuck closed, building pressure and the gas is finding a way out of some weak point. (edit) Did the evap drive cycle monitor pass?

Yeah and you know what else sucks? Pick-A-Part and places like that drill out the gas tanks to drain the fuel. So if you need a replacement forget them. You have to find a 'real' salvage yard that will hook you up if you want to go used on the tank.

I thought about the line switching as well. But I also have no idea how gas tanks work, especially on my truck. I work nights and just woke up from a nap. Going to try again and see if I can’t figure out how it works

Not sure where you are but I have the gas tank I saved from a 2001 4x4 I parted out a while back. Still complete and good.

havnt had the chance to fully investigate yet. But if/when I find something I’ll follow up here. I have a theory as to where it could be plugged, but then again I don’t know how gas tanks work so I’m just theorizing.

It’s really easy for those seals around the sender and the filler to leak if they’re not tightens down just right, I’d start there. If you’ve got a few strong friends ya might just take the bed off so you can look at it.

You can weld gas tanks shut.

After drain and 24 hr blower blast, I would of taken a manifold plug of right size and JB welded it in place....
lightly braze it so it sets almost immediately......and 48 hr cure time...

A few weeks after I purchased the new tank I learned about a patch they sell at Kragens (yes, it’s still Kragens to me). Don’t know if it was long term or not though but wish I knew of it sooner
