8 shifts within 20 seconds last night. New record? :101010:

Seriously though, has this repeated hunting happened to anyone else? Would have expected the OTT tune to fix it...

    PARAMETERS:
3rd Gen Tacoma - Automatic transmission - Overland Torque Tune - Cruise control set to 78mph - S5 mode - Steady grade - No input from driver - 265/70R17 Tires - Hauling no more than 200 pounds of gear at time of filming

I've been thinking about the OTT tune, but not now. Probably need a pedal commander or gen 1,2, or 4 to remedy things. 5th gen will be the best gen.

That's what happens when you put a double OD 6AT in a truck with economy gearing. A tune won't fix it unless you force it to hold gears longer before upshifting.

Simply moving the automatic stick shifter into sport mode and selecting the gear can resolve it. No need to buy a different truck.

This is exactly why I’m considering a re-gear. My truck is tuned as well (not OTT though) and going up a grade at anything above 75mph, with cruise control on, the truck holds at around 5,000rpm just to keep up to speed. Sometimes 5,500rpm.

The stock gearing is just garbage. It’s the only thing I dislike about my truck, everything else I absolutely love and I wouldn’t trade this truck for any other vehicle.

You should sell it. Why would you drive a truck that makes you unhappy?

    These are the two reasons
    - The shift tables for cruise control are separate from manual driving. Tunes have very limited influence on gear hunting under cruise control. If you repeated the same conditions with cruise control off, it likely wouldn't have hunted.
    - S5 is still overdrive, this would be like top gear for 2nd gen automatics. Slap it into S4 for long grades.

Where did you read that the truck is making me unhappy? o_O Going to regear probably and continue to enjoy it

Helpful info, thanks guys. I was in S5 during this clip and moved it down to S4 for grades afterwards. I typically never use cruise control but this was a 2.5h hour highway drive

I just tied your record on the trip I'm on now. 8 shifts from between 5th and 4th in a short time. I was going 67mph up a slight incline where I knew it couldn't hold 5th, so it made no sense for it to upshift. This is with cruise control on.

And at other times cruise control holds 4th gear after climbing and cresting a hill for 10+ second after it levels off.

Driving the rolling hills in Oklahoma, I had similar issues. OTT and 5.29s fixed everything for me. Let’s you drive with the cruise and it rarely drops to 5th on the highway now.

I’m stationed in Oklahoma, it’s not as flat as I expected it to be.
