This is what I do. If I'm on a steady grade and it has already down shifted int 4 I lock it there until I'm through the grade. Sucks having to do that but I've just accepted that's the way it is

I'm not trying to be a smart ass asking this, but what did that do to your fuel economy?

Drive a 2016 without updates, its brutal.

It's the 3rd gens biggest problem, the power band and gearing. Programming is a bandaid.

    No worries, 16-17mpg on average.

I also have 33” K02 Load E tires and a lift on the truck. That def doesn’t help the mpg.

Given your setup, I think that's pretty respectable

Go back to the stock Toyota tune and put 4:88s in it. Never look back.

Since you actually know what you’re talking about…Do you agree that re-gearing is the only real solution for the 3rd gen to fix this issue?

Early 2016 truck even with a couple updates was still bad. I traded mine on a 17 manual within 18 months and my gear hunting problems were never seen again.

Yes. 4.88 at minimum. This puts it close to how the manual is geared which drives night and day different.

unless you never go over 55 mph then your truck probably has no issues.

4.88's sounds like the way to go, ECGS regear+locker all in one go seems like a good deal for $920. Since I have a Sport I have no locker

4:88s are perfect on these trucks if you don’t plan on going for massive tires or thousands of pounds of extra weight. I’m on 275/70/17 and the gearing is perfect, if not slightly over-geared. No gear hunting at all.

Bilstein 6112 front / 5100 rear (extended) shocks, Headstrong AAL, Firestone airbags, 4.88 gears, OME Carrier bearing drop kit, Aluminum 1/4" skids (engine to transfer). Custom sliders (1.75" HREW tube w/ 3/16" base plates). Custom front bumper and high clearance rear bumper (1/4" steel plate, 1.75" tube.) Apex 5500 winch w/synthetic line (36lbs) and required accessories for an underpowered winch (snatch blocks and extra line.) Tekonsha P3 brake controller, remote start, any-time-backup camera w/ front facing camera, Leer 100R shell (w/e-track single slot tie-down mounts for removable Yakima EasyTop.) Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. Anytime rear with front facing camera. Billet front seat risers. Viair 88p. 265/75r16 Goodyear Ultra-terrain tires.

Just to clarify for others following along.. that $920 you mention may be adding the locker only. Regear is closer to $3k for a 4x4 (~$1,500 for a 2wd truck) unless you're doing the gears yourself.

This is the product I was referring to, assembled 3rd member with E-locker and choice of gearing. Understood that the install labor will be significant though, up to the price range you mentioned

I dont think you can just add that, and have an E-locker on a Sport. It will take way more than that to get it to work, power switches, wiring, etc... Ski

Yes I think installing the diff and doing the necessary adjustments is definitely above my skill level so I would need to pay a shop, but I could handle the wiring for it. Assuming the shop wouldnt require paying them to do the wiring too :spending:

I agree with @skidooboy, I believe the ECGS link you posted is for Tacoma's that have the factory/OEM e-locker.

This links appears to be the options for swapping out SR/SR5/Sport clamshell with a locker: Either the ARB or Harrop options.. below is the option fees from ECGS when ordering a 3rd member.

    upload_2024-10-15_11-27-12.png

So $895 for the clamshell/gear swap plus the fee above.

You will be happier if you install 4.88 gears with the OTT tune.

if you had a manual transmission and was trying to climb the same grade in sixth gear the truck would just get slower until cruise control disengaged and you would have to downshift to get up to spear again.
